Hey guys, first post here, but been reading on and off for a wee while.

Ive currently got a 93 MX-5 and a 01 Suzuki SV650s, im considering getting rid of them both (they both recently had quite costly repairs carried out and I have had NO LUCK with either of them..) and buying something else.

Here are my criterea:

Must be quicker in a straight line than the maz
Must cost less than £1500 to insure (im 20 with three years NCB, a civic type R would cost me around £1300 TPFT)
Must be capable of "spirited" driving as well as reasonably comfy motorway cruising
Initial cost to buy under £7k
Less than 80k miles on the clock with FSH
Be mechanically sound with no known major problems and generally regarded as reliable.

Its a bit of a tall ask I know, but so far I have picked out:

Civic Type R
Fiesta ST
Celica 1.8 VVT
Clio 182 Cup
Accord 2.4 sport

I had also thought about an RX8, but the insurance is a bit too dear and the reliability factor is important because I do a 40 mile round trip to work. I really dont want to sell my MX-5, I love it to bits, but I havent had a period of more than 2 months where something hasnt gone wrong with it, that coupled with its coming round to needing new tyres, roof and cambelt amongst other things kind of leads me to think it might be best to part ways with it...

So - Whos got some ideas of what I can get!?

Thanks

No idea what you should get, but will insurers do TPFT on a car of that value?

Of those, last model Civic Type R with ease. How much are Focus STs? Think I'd still have the CTR though.

Considered the bimmer - Theyre great, but quite common... Cupra R is a good shout - Oh, I also thought about an S3 - but that is about 300 dabs out of my insurance upper limit and also very expensive to buy.

CTR. Really good cars, and will suit you well if you want reliability.

What is the 0-60 of your particular mazda?

Not sure how insurance would be, but a Integra Type R could be a good shout? But it might be a bit noisy on the motorways though...

The Twingo Sports seem like a bit of a laugh! Think these new "warm hatches" are bringing a bit of the spirit from the likes of 205 and Mk1 Golfs back to modern days.

The Golf 1.8T are very nice also, but would probably cost a bit to insure, when i was checking my insurance for one a few months back, there's a few companies who dont insure the car for under 21's... As my supermarket insurer told me.

I know i'm a bit Suzuki Bias but the new Suzuki Swifts are in price range and are very nice, but you might not find it quick enough in the straight line if you're looking at TypeR's.

The Toyota Corolla 2L VVTI thing is quite nice as well, same engine as the Celica, and probably more in the class of the Type R, insurance group 14 IIRC, so a bit cheaper to insure compared to the Civic Type R probably.

MX5? Didn't read the OP but it's bound to be suggested.

0-60 is something like 10 seconds in mine - its the 116 bhp 1.6, but its past its best and ive put some (admittedly very lush) 16 inch wheels on it which obviously took any kind of punch out of the acceleration.

I am leaning very much toward the CTR at the moment, I lusted over them the first time I saw one at just 12 years old when they were bought out, and have wanted one ever since.

Had thought about a "warm" hatch, but I dont think the straight line performance is going to be enough...

Fair enough, you seem to have your heart more or less set on the CTR and cant be faulted. Just try your hardest to find one which hasn't been abused and you'll be sorted! I know what you mean, I've always had a soft spot for them as well, my cousin bought one brand new when they just came out, I loved it! Upsetting that he got rid of it 1-2 years after ownership because the wee one came along, got a Accord instead!

How long till you're 21? If it can be waited maybe wait so that insurance can be a bit more bearable? With my Suzuki it is going to drop from regions of £800 down to £500-£600 when i hit 21 (group 9 IIRC) , so i'm delighted! I'll probably be driving it till i graduate before getting something with a bit more serious performance.

For some strange reason direct line and tesco have always given me the most competitive quotes, and after quoting i usually phone them up and blag another £100 or so off them, with all mods declared... Maybe try and get the cheapest quote you can find and phone them up to try and get it a bit closer to £1000?

But if all fails the Corolla is probably the most similar to the Type R, same N/A with Variable Valve Timing Technology, think its as quick as the CTR, it just misses out a little compared to the Civic IMO... But still a very nice car.

Out of the ones you've listed I'd say CTR, but I I wouldn't honestly go for one myself.

What's insurance like on an Impreza or DC5 ITR?

These would be a good comfy option and with plenty of grip, not as focused as an MX-5, but good turn of speed and Tiff gave them a good write up.

But if I was 20 with a £7k wedge to spend on a motorcar I fail to see why you wouldn't want something more, well more like these:

Lower mileage is generally regarded as a good thing, correct me if im wrong.. I know that service history is the most important thing, but surely if you can get something with full history and low miles you have to be on to a winner!?
