Right, although my 330d is probably perfectly capable of towing 2 horses the two or three times a year that i need to, but i have decided that i need a 4x4!

Plus i dont want the hassle in the snow that i've had with a rear wheel drive car (forget the snow tire arguement for now)

Budget is around 15k.

I do a fair few miles so needs to be comfortable and fairly economical. I'm just wondering if i have missed any out:

x5 - getting a bit dated now but otherwise probably perfect - would go for 3.0d engine or 35d maybe???

range rover / sport - too expensive

Q7 - don't see that many of these - why????

freelander tdv8 - i have heard this engine is not so good prior to some changes that happened around 2007 - which prob puts it out of my price range.

Any suggestions / advice would be great.

Cheers

Sounds like a Freelander TDV8 would be perfect for the job.

Doesn't exist but it'd be perfect getmecoat

Seriously though, why is a Range Rover too expensive? Or what about a Disco? Should be able to get a D3 for that money.

Why the obsession with one car to do everything

Keep the dull boring grey box and buy an old defender for towing duties

haha i knew that didnt sound right - yeah discovery tdv8. I heard the engone was underpowered and uneconomical prior to a change in 2007 though?

hmmm, why not one car??? Well, i already have one for racing, so not strictly wanting the other car to do "everything" and how much tax and insurance do i want to pay?!?! plus spaces to keep them all.

Maybe have a look at range rovers, had a quick look the other night and didnt seem to be many at that budget.

If the winter just past is anything to go by then an X5 is rubbish in the snow. I passed several of them who were stuck and I was in an mx5. I know it's mainly down to the tyres but I didn't have winter tyres on my car, but they are not as big or low profile as the X5.

What about:
Volvo XC90 or XC70
Nissan X-Trail
Audi A4 in quattro avant flavour of some sort

You wont get a Q7 for 15k. Previous shape X5 only comes in 3.0d diesel form.

Id say X5 or a Disco, or perhaps a nice defender - depends how far you will be towing.

You will get a RR for £15K. You won't get a Q7 for £15K. Oh, not many Q7's around as they are horrific.

I don't think Rangies are meant to be all that reliable.

I'd also question how good something like an X5 would be in the snow, given it has large low profile road tyres. Don't get me wrong, I like them and would consider one as a road car, but don't think they'd be great for your purposes.

I would probably look at something like a Mitsi Shogun.

Or a Toyota Landcruiser- the link below has a nice looking one listed.

For two horses you need a full size 4x4. An xtrail or freelander wont really cut it.

Discovery tdv6 - we have two of them and they are fantastic for towing.

We also tested the Nissan Pathfinder which is a pretty good truck, they can also be bought a lot cheaper than a discovery

I quite like Disco's being a Landy nut.

But if you want a fun 4x4 these are hard to top. Lots of funky features and with similar performance to a TDV6 Disco 3.

Word has it new ones are had for good money, so haggle hard, even on used.

Or something different:

(Would need to check if its 4wd, some are 2wd)

VW Toe-rag?

Look at the 2.5 and 3-litre V6 diesels. 3-litre is the one to go for.

I am FFRR biased but the L322 is a great bit of kit.
I have a 4.4V8 running on LPG.

Ram, F150 or a Disco 3 smile

The Disco 3 is underpowered, but it's still a cracking truck. A bit of remapping gets them a bit more shove.

Nope, the V8 diesel is only available in the full size Range Rover, not the Disco. The Disco 3 gets the 2.7 TDV6 or the rarer 4.2 n/a V8 petrol. Both good engines.
