Hello, my wife has a real interest in the above car, though not my choice I think they look ok? Anyone admit to owning one, or know anything about them. It will only do short local runs so the 1.5dci should be ok plus she wants £35 quid road tax & 50mpg, any info or french horror stories welcome, Ta

How old? They're good cars generally. Nothing to worry about if you're not doing much with them

Fairly sturdy. Just get it checked over first and you should have plenty of trouble free miles.

The folding hard tops can be prone to a few issues although most were sorted before that model. It's worth physically feeling the carpet with your hands to see if it feels damp, the one's that leak are notoriously hard to fix so it's best to find one that hasn't had the issue.

Problems with the actual roof mechanism are normally down to the many switches and the best way to reduce this is actually to use the roof fairly frequently as it keeps everything moving, this also helps the various rubber seals stay soft and working.

Mechanically it's all tried and tested stuff so no big problems.

Have a look here:

http://www.whatcar.com/car-reviews/used/renault/me...

Have a read through the Reader Reviews and see if there are any theme's regards engine issues. It's a heavy car so the 1.5 might struggle a little.

Check all electrics very carefully, window motors and actuators are a common fail. My parents have a 56 plate with just 15k and its just had all 4 motors replaced at circa £350 each plus vat and labour. They have owned from new and its serviced on the button so renault paid 90%. Oh and the handling is dreadfull

Did the Mk2 Megane not have a few electrical issues just like the similar vintage Laguna? I drove a new shape 1.5d hatch and it wasnt fast for sure. Averaged 46mpg with 200 miles on clock!

DCI engines - watch out for injector and turbo problems - to be fair though the same can be said for most modern diesel lumps these days - can cost an absolute fortune to fix if they go wrong

Friends of mine run 2 meganes.
A 1.9 convert and a 1.5 hatch.
Both have been trouble free.
The 1.5 is on 130k miles!

I was surprised by how wobbly the convert is though, you can really feel the windows moving in the openings etc.
'spose most folk wouldn't notice though.

Had a drive in a 1.5dci & it felt a bit underpowered (expected)does anyone know how they respond to a re-map? as I still fancy the idea of £35 a year road tax.

It won't make a world of difference as far as i know but would give you a slight performance increase. Isn't it for the wife? biggrin
