So my "let's learn about cars" runabout car - 1998 Corsa - all the black exterior trim above the bumper is a nice sun faded gray.

I don't really give a toss what this thing looks like, however I am going to spray these bits as a learning curve, as I have never done it before.

It is basically gray plastic that needs to be black, so is it as simple as buying some black spray paint from Halfrauds and spraying it, or do I need to do anything else beforehand?

Having just done this myself best thing to do is rub down the bumpers, fill in any scratches etc with body filler(Small tube will do as it is premixed) sand down, then use a grey primer (2 coats) 1200 grit wet to sand back (stops peeling effect), then use Black, not the Bumper Black Halfords sell (small can, more expensive) use a matt black 2 coats and it should look as good as new, alternative is spraying each week when washed with back to black stuff! oh and if you are spraying on the car mask everything as it gets everywhere, if it does get on the body work white spirit and elbow grease!!

nearly right.

1 Definitely remove the part(s) to be sprayed.
2 Rub down with wet and dry
3 Fill if required
4 Let filler dry, then rub down again with wet and dry
5 Primer
6 Allow to fully dry, then rub down with wet and dry
7 Spray paint (2 coats)
8 rub down (with very high grit) wet and dry between coats - MAKE SURE IT'S DRY BEFORE RUBBING. Then allow to fully dry.
9 lacquer (3 coats with 15 min between coats.) Then allow to fully dry.
10 rubbing compound (to remove any organge peel effect)
11 polish (to remove scratches/hazing from rubbing compound)
12 wax (to seal/shine)
13 Re-fit the part(s)
