Hi all,

Just wanted to get some suggestions for my father-in-law - he's looking in a market sector I don't have much experience in smile

He's looking for a quick 2 door car but also wants something that can accommodate a set of golf clubs and an electric trolley in the boot if possible.

Price is fairly flexible (he's currently thinking around £50k although there is a top end of around £100k). The car can be 6/12 months old.

He's not really a petrolhead, so nothing terribly compromised (my 5 year old suggested 'a Caterham like Daddy with the golf clubs on the seat'). The 'other' car is a Lexus RX400h.

He's definitely keen on a Jag - but the XK doesn't seem to have the boot space and the XF has four doors.

I suspect there's nothing that fits the bill perfectly.

Would be good to have a shortlist - then get some test drives.

Thanks in advance.

Loads at that price point, top choice has to be a Bentley GT? Massive boot, two door, seats four, take your pick of 2nd hand examples from 50-100k. Otherwie:

BMW 650i/M6
Maserati GranTurismo
New E Class Coupe

If he's willing to go a bit older you can pick up a Ferrari 612 or 575 for that money and they have quite large boots.

Thanks so far.

I mentioned the Maserati or a slightly used Ferrari and although I think he's secretly wanting to be a little 'flash' for once I think they may be just a little to overt.

Hadn't thought of the M6 - that's a good call.

How about a Corvette? They probably have quite a bit of space since they have a hatchback type boot rather than a saloon one. LHD only though, if that's a problem.

I thought the reason for the (to some eyes) bloated rear end of the XK was to allow enough boot space for two sets of golf clubs, to keep Yank customers happy??

I think LHD would be a compromise he wouldn't be willing to go for, unfortunately.

Has anyone actually tried to get two sets of golf clubs into an XK?

DB9? Not sure on the golf-club thing though. Maybe he could take some along to look at one and see if they fit?

Alpina B6. Exclusive, quick, good boot space.

Golf clubs go very easily in the back of a Bentley GT, think you could fit 3/4 in there...

I did suggest a Bentley GT, didn't meet with an overwhelming response.

There a loads around here (Totteridge, North London) and have a slightly compromised image in his eyes.

I would be surprised if Jag even made a car that couldn't fit 2x golf bags!

Would have thought the Jag would be a good bet tbh.

If not maybe something different:

Yeah just read that bit biggrin

On reflection, if they want true "flash", then it needs to be something exclusive. And if I had the money I'd be wanting one of these myself, true class and very individual:

CL 500 or an AMG version is a good call. Huge boot and a rather handsome car too.

With that budget I'd be hanging around the Aston dealership with a set of clubs and trying the various boots for size. Then I'd end up forgetting the age restriction and buying a Aston Martin V8 Oscar India or a V600 if I was really insane hehe

I wouldn't have thought the Mazza was at all in your face. Buy one in dark grey or gunmetal colour and it looks stunning. I can understand Ferrari having a stigma attached to the name but most people will never have seen the Maserati before and wouldn't attach any preconceptions to it. GranTourismo would be (and will be) my choice.
