The time has come to sell my ‘toy’ (FIAT Barchetta) as I have not been using it enough; in fact it has been on a SORN for a year now.

I spent 2 days re-commissioning the car (serviced the brakes, changed the oil, etc), cleaned and waxed it (looks about as good as a 11 year old car with 78k on the clock can). I have also just put it through an MOT which it flew through first time with no advisories.

I am aiming to try and get around the 3k mark for the car so am a little hesitant about spending more than I need to in order to sell it.

Question is, will I be able to sell with a year’s MOT but still on a SORN? Trouble with taxing the car is that aside from the £112 to actually tax the car I will also have to spend £68 on a month’s insurance to be able to apply for the tax......

Thoughts/experiences/opinions anyone?????

i'd get it taxed.

it'll be a pain in the ass for anyone who wants to buy it if it isn't. It would put me off going to see it, especially if there are many similar cars at that price, which are taxed.

tax it. You wont get the money back, but it will be easier to sell

Don't forget the 14 day cooling off period for insurance over the web. Get the insurance, get your tax, cancel the insurance. Ding ding ding.

Yes tax it (6 months) for several reasons.

1. It makes it more appealing, and thus easier to sell
2. Any potential buyer can turn up and drive it off without having to sort out the tax
3. You can use it as a bargaining point, so if they haggle you down, you can in turn say you'll keep the tax and claim it back (can't claim the month back you are in, but if it sells soon you could get 5 months worth back).

I've just bought a car without tax and it is a bit annoying. If it hadn't been something of a bargain I wouldn't have bothered as I did really want the tax.

You could also investigate single day insurance. I've never tried taxing a car using day insurance, some people swear you can't do it, others swear they have done it...

I expect £500 cars to have some tax on them, I'd get it taxed.
