A thought that just popped into my head, but we've often potured over what F1 cars would be like if the rules were relaxed to allow whatever suspension/turbo/aero they wanted and only gave them a few rules such as engine size. That's obviously unlikely to happen in F1, but isn't something similar exactly what Electric cars could do with?

An electric class, say for the Lemans 24 Hrs, with the only limits being a single permanent battery pack, or two replacable suitcase-sized ones, and something arbitary like max power to the driving motors would surely produce faster technological gains through competition than a design/accountancy team choosing which compromises to scale up for production in the tens of thousands, no?

I think it'll happen. Diesels at Le Mans are, apart from a few historic exceptions, quite a recent concept. All that has to happen is that different fuels are given different concessions/penalties.

I'd say that within 10 years we'll see some electric entries in mainstream races.

Best thing to do is just give every engine form a set amount of energy to start with, and leave them to it, soon see some interesting kit...
