im looking at buying a new daily driver
getting up to a maximum of around 2k
need to be able to fit a drum kit in the boot.
would quite like rwd or 4wd
something quite nippy
relativly reliable
average insurance (no evos, scoobs etc)
I drive alot on lanes so its ruling out a drft mobile really.
thinking pulsar gtir sort of region.

if people could list them It would make it easier.
cheers in advance.

Don't bother with a GTiR for £2k, it will cause you untold problems - plus, a really shallow boot (thanks to 4WD) makes big loads a pain. In fact, you are unlikely to get into that kind of level of performance for £2k, so I would set your sights a bit lower, or find another £2-3k.

Try:
Golf VR6
Peugeot GTi6
Xsara VTS
Almera GTi
Primera GT (hatch)
Mondeo ST24 (hatch/estate)
BMW E36 325i (estate)
MG ZT-T 190
Saab 9-3 Turbo

Can you get a decent GTiR for £2k? And are they really cheaper insurance than an Impreza?

I am a little doubtful about a gtir, been reading alot of horror storys about them.
thats why im asking for other sugestions.
im not set on that power fiqure it would just be nice but less is fine especially as I will be driving lanes alot and it will save me alot in fuel.
dont really like bmws and the like + unless its a compact it wont fit where I want to take it very well.

I actully have a rallye, its my rally car and daily at the moment due to lack of funds for a few months but now I want to get a nice daily again and keep the rallye either in the mud or in the garage.

I would also prefer 4wd or rwd as im getting a bit bored of fwd (my last 6 or so cars)
however I am considering a st170 or clio 172 or the likes

I think there's quite a bit of scope, but £2k isn't a huge sum of money, so will limit RWD/AWD options some what.

As a non RWD option how about something like an MG ZS180 or a Honda Accord Type R? Both can be had for around £2k and both good drives and fairly quick.

A BMW is the obvious answer for RWD, but other less obvious ones could be something like a Triumph 2000/2500 or Dolomite Sprint. You might even find something like an SD1 V8 Rover in budget.

As for lanes, well it depends on your take, I too live in the country side and like B/C road bashing, but I find I get as much fun doing this in a modded Disco and Chavy Camaro as I do in my Roadster or TR7.

So bigger, less obvious cars can still be fun.

In fact I'd almost go as far to say that something like a GTIR or even a Scooby may lose it's appeal somewhat. In some ways they are too fast to really enjoy, you need to driven them at 10th/10th's to make them fun. So once the "speed" novelty has worn off (which it will), you'll be left with a car that might actually not be as much fun as some others.

Ignoring what I've just said, Subaru Forrester's can be had for sensible money, so maybe try the insurance out on one of them instead of an Impreza.

If you fancy something different, then you could look at alternative cars, something like a 1990's Ford Thunderbird. They have a V6, V8 or supercharged V6 engine, are RWD and have IRS. More of a GT than sports car, but fun, fast, comfy and big enough to get a drum kit in and have 4 seats.

There was a tidy supercharged one on eBay recently for £2600.

some good points to think about!
im not sure what reliabilty or even general comfort would be like in something like a sprint.
I agree with what your saying! I think the prime car for the lanes is the 106 rallye with its 100bhp.
but im looking for something thats a bit of fun for racing a scoob off the lights aswell.
Im really liking the classic jap cars with big turbos currently as iv never really had one.
the mg zt again is a little big for what I had in mind, it would have to be something that really caught my eye to make me get a big car. the zr 160 may be a contender though as they can be had pretty cheap but headgaskets may put me off, although im sure there must be a good kit out there for them.

Jap turbo cars are good, although to get one big enough to get a drumkit in, yet small enough to B road bash may be a tough feat.

The MG to look at IMO, is the ZS. Still quite small, only weighs about 1200kg too. And the KV6 engine is very good and not known for HG failures.

S13 200SX might be worth a look, hatch on them and I think (would need to check) folding rear seats would mean getting a drum kit in would be possible.

Very underated cars, but it's worth pointing out that there's a stupid bulkhead type thing behind the rear seats that doesn't fold so, although the total loading volume is quite generous, the amount you can get in any one place (either side of the bulkhead) is a little limited. Probably okay for individual drums, but you can only get one mountain bike in there, for example.

The BMW 3-Series also has a small apperture between the boot and the rear seats I'm told.

As a slightly leftfield idea how about a somewhat (mechanically) modified 328 Touring? A few engine tweaks, some coilovers and an LSD could develop one into quite a sleeper.

I wouldnt buy something old and turbo for £2k, will most likely be a money pit.

Accord Type R.

i will look into accords as they keep coming up.
that bulkhead you were talking about in the mg would cause i problem most likely, its not just drums its large pa speakers and bits where headroom can be a problem in the first place, so having to manoeuvre a bloody great 50kg box over a bulkhead im not liking the thought of.

I would like a 200sx, they were what first got me thinking about getting another daily driver, absolutly no chance of going round the lanes in it though. but thats what the rally cars for I suppose.

They actually handle pretty well, just take a bit more skill than your average fwd hatch.

Get yourself, or the band a van for gigging. When we were out gigging we bought a £180 Transit. Did the job with ease.

I will be looking at getting a van but not for a little while, the rally car comes first :P
Im talking about proper devon twistys where a 200sx would not only beech itself on the bumps but probably have its nose in one hedge and its arse in the other when it got to a 90.
but the more i think about it I would be happy using the rallye for the lanes, it is what its built for at the end of the day.
would just be nice to have the option of spinning something rwd round the hairpins if I felt like it on the way home.

so I think really my options are:

be able to do a bit of proper laneing
clio 172
focus st170
etc

or

200sx
beemer
etc
just stick to the nice lanes... and have a few more "moments" when I forget my little rallyes doubled in length
