MX5 Insurance - Young Driver
Discussion
Hello,
I will be 20 years old next month and will have 3 years NCB under my belt, therefore I think it's time to upgrade from my 1.3 Mitsubishi Colt. Currently I'm looking at getting a 1.6 mk1 MX5, prefferably the 110bhp version in either UK or Eunos form.
Of course, insurance is always going to be an issue and I've been ringing round countless places with quotes ranging from £850 upwards for a UK car and £1500 upwards for a Eunos. Ideally I would prefer the import, especially after finding a couple of decent examples in my price range. Why is the insurance so much higher on one of these? Also, are there any specialist insurers I should be contacting, I've tried A-plan which is affiliated with the MX5OC but they aren't interested in under 25s, and Adrian Flux gave quotes at £1000 - £1500 respectively. Can I expect anything cheaper than this, and if so where can I find it? Any help would be great,
Seb

Try Elephant, they usually come out ok. no point using Comparison sites they tend to be a complete rip ogg, my car comparison sites £850, Elephant direct £360 Just keep ringing round and give them your last quote less £100 quid. you may knock them down.
Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Elephant won't be able to knock prices down the price given is the only one they can offer (only way to change the price is amending the details which may reduce the price).Good luck, let us know how you get on.
But as A205Gti said ring around insurers to get the best price.
Main reason for higher costs for imports is that sometimes the part has to be ordered from abroad meaning repair time can be longer increasing the cost of a claim (although there are other reasons too but this is just one of them).
hiya, cant be to specific as im non too familiar with mx5's, i take it you have gone down the go compare/money supermarket route?
for some reason insurers take a dim view of imports due to the (occasionally) added risk of repair should you stack it, for example if you crashed a turbonutterbastid jap only import, it would require a specialist to work on and specialist parts that would be more expensive/difficult to source. obviously in the case of the mx5/eunos not much is different and parts for both are widely available in this country, but the insurance co's have a VERY big brush and they like to tar everybody and everything with it. That is why the insurance is more expenisve
