Whilst watching some Road Wars / traffic cops show last night I saw some kid (17) get pulled over in a Metro with 4 mates inside. He had no license and (obviously) no insurance. In the round up it said he was banned from driving for 1 year and fined £50! £50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT THE fk?

This is just crazy, if the fines are so low why the hell would you every bother with insurance if you are some pikey dole bludging ? If we hard working folk pay a fortune to insure our toys and these little sts don't even get hit in the pocket when they get caught then where's the justice in the system?

Should there be a minimum fine for no insurance - let's say whatever the premium would have been + 100% + 1 hour community service for every pound the premium would have cost. Sounds good to me.

But then he'll break into your house to knick your laptop and telly so he can afford the fine.

This is the good old means tested!! so you mr law abiding gets pulled over genuine mistake with MOT ie drive for a few days not realising it has expired and you will get what they call the book thrown at you. How much you on £30k thatll be 3k fine and six points as you are a soft target. Chav next no licence unemployed etc... £50 quid fine!!

please note this has never happened to me, but one of my friends.

Also bloke at work garage broken into they catch them Fine £200 payable over 2 years, yes thats right two years, he got £50 before giving up the chasing of the court for the money.

Edited for Spelling!

On Road Wars last night they pulled over some pikey who was 14 years old. They took him down the police station and ... banned him from driving for a year

As if that's going to stop him! Ridiculous.

As said above, when people have genuinely forgotten to renew insurance or whatever, they get a huge fine and points. Seems if you're a career criminal you basically get away with it.

I like the idea from the OP.. the fine should be what their insurance premium would of been, but doubled.. This should stop some of them from bothering, as at the moment the punishment definitely does not fit the crime..and because of that so many people are choosing not to follow the law, and it works out well for them!

When and if he finaly decides to become a decent citizen and insure a car properly it will flag up as high risk, and would find getting isurnace difficult... And this just means that it becomes a vicious cycle as he cant afford insurance even when he is willing to pay.

+1
Only instead of WHEN it is more a case of IF he finally becomes a decent citizen!

There was a survey in bristol and the average premium for a 18year old was 10x what the average fine for 18year olds convicted of driving without insurance hence you get to a stage where the fines are smaller than premiums year in year out so it is cost effective.

Impounding their cars hasnt made any difference as they only have £1-300 cars so that + a £50 fine means that even if they lose 5 cars and get fined they would have paid less than what i paid for my premuim when i was 18.

I get so wound up watching Road Wars/Traffic Cops et al. Saw one a couple of nights ago where the 'Pro-Active team' caught two of the pikey-est pikeys you would ever come across, running away from a Handbag that had been reported stolen in a Bracknell multi-storey. They spat at the police officers, refused to get in the van, shouted abuse at everyone etc.

At the end of the piece: "The two louts were released without charge due to lack of forensic evidence".

What. The fk.

Saw that one too and was screaming at the TV. Could not believe it . . . surely there is something they could have charged them with on common decency as it was all on camera and the behaviour was so far from acceptable by a civilised person. They are a sub-species.
