Giving them away.

The missus' Almera is due MOT at the end of the month, so Sunday I started in to clean up a coupe of rusty brake pipes. Wire brush, Vactan, job's a good one. Noticed a bit of rust bubbling on the inside of the rear arch, behind the spring. Rub rub with my wire brush, oh dear it's gone in to a hole. Hmm...how come I can take handfuls of the chassis out of the car? Moved to the front, noticed the whole floor under the driver's footwell is going in to holes, along with a power steering rack that's pissing oil.
So cut a long story short, the local Hyundai dealer gave us £3k swappage for the £400 rotbox 2001 90k Almera, against a brand new i30.
OK, it's not the world's best car, but it has aircon, 5 year warranty, electric everything, and we're driving it away tomorrow for £10k on the nose.
Manufacturers must be desperate if they're prepared to give £2600 over the odds for a rusty old lump of scrap...

You only got £2600 off a Hyundai list price? So cut a long story short, the local Hyundai dealer gave us £3k swappage for the £400 rotbox 2001 90k Almera, against a brand new i30.

Bwwwaaa ha ha.

I don't think its desperation..
Hyundai have grown massively as a brand in 12-18months and the government scrappage scheme was a big winner for them.
They are simply trying to continue their own scheme. Trying to sell more cars at less profit and undercut more established brands like Ford, Vauxhall and even VW/Skoda.
If you're not a badge snob the i30, IMO, is a fantastic car for the money! Well built, 5year warranty, reasonable kit - all for considerably less than the equivalent Golf / Focus / Astra.
Enjoy the car

No, £3k. Try reading all the post next time.RenesisEvo said:
Perhaps his point was regarding the £400 you 'could' have got by selling the Almera - if instead they took it and gave you £3k off, your actual discount is then only 2600.
Well, it only has a week's MOT left, it needs a power steering rack to pass MOT ignoring the rot, and two tyres are close to the limit, so really it'd need another £400+ of parts to make it sellable. This way it's someone else's problem.HellDiver said:

Or they over price the car by £2k, so essentially sold you the i30 for the normal price and gave you £600 for your rot box? So cut a long story short, the local Hyundai dealer gave us £3k swappage for the £400 rotbox 2001 90k Almera, against a brand new i30.

Totally agree... mine also had a leaking steering rack, and the gearbox/clutch did not sound healthy at all, even if they did work. Great car though. I chose to get a second-hand, 21-month old Focus when I p/x it.LuS1fer said:
I see Toyota have finally got round to offering a 5 year warranty. Better late than never.
Just a shame they don't have a single vehicle that is more interesting HM Revenue letter on offer at the moment.I seriously do think Toyota deserve some kind of award for the dullest most boring car line at present.

The LX is staying, it's my car. She gets the i30. The Mondeo will still be used for longer trips, it's a decent motorway car and good for touring. Yes, really it is.
Even better since it was remapped, goes better than a 2 litre now.

Full of rot after 9 years?!???
Hmm... that doesnt sound like a reasonable life expectancy for any car!!
They seem to have forgotten to underseal the car. It was an import, so it may have been orginally destined for S. Africa or something? Hmm... that doesnt sound like a reasonable life expectancy for any car!!
Local dealers had a few years around 2000/2001 where they brought in imports, so there's a load of Opel Astras, Irish spec Renaults, and rusty Nissans floating about all from that era.
