These are my requirements

Registered BEFORE 1st March 2001.
Less than 1550cc.
5 seats.
Mid size so no Ka's etc.
Reliable
Cheap to run.
50ish mpg min on a run.
Will start after not being used for a week or so.
£1000 MAX

So what options do I have other than a Nissan Almera or Skoda Fabia?

would an almera do 50mpg? cant see it myself but you could correct me and can you get a fabia on an 01 for under 1k... im guesing for that you'd get the 1.4mpi engine which probs wouldnt do 50mpg more like 40-45... i'd probs just buy a 5dr 6n polo for the reliabilty....

EDIT just noticed the before 01 lol even though it was in capitals i still missed it... sorry lol

you've got loads of options then but i'd go with a polo or fabia (my choice polo as the interior is a bit nice even though the car would be a bit older

Sure, tax reasons only looking at 125 quid a year then smile. Reluctant to pay much more for something that is only going to see a few thousand miles a year.

I'd personally go for a 1.5 Vtec Civic.

Of course a civic how did i forget that one.

I am liking those pugs SOOOOOOOO cheap its unreal. But pugs reliable REALLY?

Does the 1.4 struggle on the motorway thus affecting economy?

I have a 1.2 Corsa that was registered in March 2001. It costs almost twice as much to tax as one that is identical in every way but registered a few weeks earlier. It's bullst.

On that subject, a Corsa might fit the bill. Not much fun to drive, but they are very cheap to run and repair.

Golf III 1.4. Even shabby ones are usually quite solid.

Rather than limit yourself to cars under 1550cc and before 2001,

Have a look on http://www.motors.co.uk

in the search box you can specify the current tax cost to say under £130 and you might find something else to look at like this
