I don't know whre to put this so I'll put it in here as you all seem helpful.

I've decided to get a ford focus estate. Now do I want Petrol or Diesel? and how many miles can I roughly get out of a full tank of petrol of either. It'll be a 1999-2001 age car.

It'll just mainly be for pottering around town on nursery runs, but I don't want it to drain out as quickly as my 2.0ltr Beetle Cab does.

What are your thoughts?

That's an incredibly hard question to answer.

Driving style, location, type of journey, condition of engine etc will all make a difference surely?

Yes I know that, But I just want a rough guide book this is how many miles the car SHOULD get if you don't drive it like a tit.

Which would be better for economy in your eyes? smile Needs to have a big boot, under £1500, cheap insurance (5 yrs no claims with no accident/convictions)

i had the issue of finding an estate car that would be reliable and great on fuel.

I opted for the pug 406 hdi 110.... i have done 14k trouble free miles and i get 800miles to a tank of derv combined. 200 miles to £20 round town.

I found it better than the more popular cars.

Yes but don't pugs break very easily? and are not reliable?

I've got a mk1 TDCi Focus - gets about 45-48mpg with mixed and sometimes enthusiastic driving. I'd expect you to get about the same given you'll probably have a lighter right foot than me, but the estate will weigh more.

Ford diesels aren't as frugal as their German counterparts of the same era, in my experience. The TDCi engine is smooth for a diesel of its age though.

1.7DTI Eco4 Mk4 Astra estate. You'll see over 70mpg on the motorway no problems, near 55mpg in town. Just don't expect to get anywhere fast.
