I have a terrible hankering for one in estate guise but i may settle for a hatchback, what are they like to own?

Its to replace a 1 series potentially as it is too small, and will have to be a diesel as a V6 is out of the question as we do around 20k per year

Oh and apart from injectors and flywheels anything else worth looking out for?

I bought one recently and think it is a great car.

It depends on what you want to spend really - don't discount the ST220 based on your mileage. I do approx 20k per year and have the ST220. It is about £2000 cheaper than the equivalent TDCI and does not come with the list of issues that the diesel has (most of which you have mentioned - factor in new injectors and that is circa £1000 already). I worked out that you would need about 2.5 years of driving to break even.

I have the saloon in silver and it looks great, refined, sporty set up (different chassis and set up than a standard Mk 3) and has loads of gear as standard. The heated screen and mirrors are great in the frost.

Servicing is typical for any car and I am averaging 32.1 mpg (based on my ow calculations and the OBC).

Keep in mind the ST TDCi isn't really an ST, it uses the same suspension and steering setup as the normal Mondeo, which compared to an ST220, is crap!

I had one as a rental. Economy was good (forgot the credit card so had to drive to Bolton and back in a hurry on one tank) but it wheelspinned like a bd. Also I didn't like the amount of lag on the throttle when pulling away from junctions.

Standard Mondeo mkIII suspension and steering is hardly crap - easily one of the best handling 'cooking' saloons from a non german brand.

I've got the diesel and the handling is immense, so don't worry about that. I must say that the engine is poor though, a remap and/or decat will help there but it's still not that quick. I find myself lusting for the V6 but I, like you, do around 20K per year so no dice...

Pretty much the only car I had that I still miss - when you see a proper on, id est the ST220 and not the heavy oil lookalike - I always think what a fantastic car it was. Lots of power, lots of space and lots of comfort. Get an ST220 - you won't regret it.

I ran one for 12 months and put 40k on it. Cracking car.

I would have another one in a heartbeat.

I've got an ST220 in performance blue, with black interior. Lovely and comfy, has a bit of road presence without being too showy, handles very well, and not bad economy wise (I get about 33 if trundling along at national speed limits on cruise control). Engine is lovely and torquey...it's almost an auto on most of the driving I do. Gets lots of positive comments ref colour and style.

I'm not so sure about the some of the black/red leather examples ( nearly bought one but the missus hated it). Since I've had mine I've had to change the rear wheel bearings (at 55K) and seems to have a bit of a brake judder despite new discs which may be suspension related. Wheels are often prone to be shabby.

Brother in law has an STTDCI...suffers the dreaded smoke and injector fault and runs terrible at idle, and handling feels totally different to mine...a lot softer, but not a great deal more roll... Also it's only half leather...

Cheers

If you buy an ST TDCi, get Focus ST front brakes. All you need are the calipers, disks & pads. Its a popular upgrade and a massive improvement. The ST TDCi brakes are crap. I used to have one, now have a Focus ST. Still drive the ST TDCi as I sold it to my dad. Its like their are spongy and the Focus ones are so sharp.

We've never had any problems with the ST TDCi (2006 '06' facelift) except the EGR valve was replaced. That one of the most common faults with the car.

The standard rims suffer with laquer peel quite badly, even without any kurb damage. Skirt jacking point cover dont seem to stay on that well either.

This is ours.

Its goot, but in the ST TDCi, its too soft and boat like, not sporty enought. Need to be stiffer & a lot lot lower espically with the 18" rims.

Totally disagree with the above. The ST Tdci strikes a very good compromise between comfort and handling. Lower and stiffen it and you lose that. Let's be honest, it's never going to be a Sunday Morning car, but it does have a cracking change of direction, bags of grip, and a spot-on chassis.

I genuinely prefer the handling of the Mondy -all round- to my old 182 Cup.

Have to add handling was excellent when I had my ST TDCI for a FWD large car.

Big car too lots of space - it is like a class bigger than a 3 series i.e. we took 5 adults in mine 4 rugby players min 16 stone each with luggage & beers & food plenty of room & even that laiden managed mid 50's mpg.

EGR went on mine within weeks of having it, quick clear screen chips vey easily and can cause it to fail.

I had electric recaro seats which were very good the compromise is if you had std seats the rear have built in child bolster seats Recaros dont.

SOund system was upgraded (Factory upgraded) and really good.

Voice control worked very well.

Downsides - it only has 155bhp & 300Ft/Lbf so its brisk but thats it.
Rear hatch if you have a hatckback open it when raining or water droplets on your rear screen and it always goes into your boot - comes off the edge.
Alloyes lose their lacquer & are a pain to clean due to so many slats.

I used to keep finding pools of water in the space wheel well due to this.

Also, the spare wheels is a space saver. The well does fit a fully size wheel but you will also need to buy 2 large foam pads from Ford to raise the rest of the boot floor so that its level. Wasnt to expensive when I bought it, but the Ford parts guy was supprised it was foam & asked me if he'd ordered the correct part for me.

The alloys are a pain to clean, but when they are, they suit the car perfectly. Some people fit Focus ST wheels, which also look good. Even Mk2 Focus RS 19"s.
