Took my PJ in for a service and MOT on Saturday. Pretty standard, but brakes needed a clean (road trip to Scotland last month!). Noticed this morning that both front wheels have a circle of nasty scratches running around the centre of each spoke! The muppet who had cleaned them obviously has taken the wheels off, then put them face down on the floor of the workshop!!!

I was furious and it spoiled the start of what has been a very nice day out in the sun (football aside). Have calmed down a bit now and will take the car back tomorrow after work and see what they say. If they pay for a refurb on both fronts without any fuss I may just use them again.

Can't believe a place that specialises in tyres could get it so wrong.

There you go- spleen partly vented.

This isn't Halfords, it's a well respected and well known garage chain in the North East. I would expect that a garage who took wheels on and off a wide range of cars all day to be able to do so without causing £££s worth of damage.

Am I setting my sights too high? Where does everyone else take their cars?

i really doubt they will do anything about it without any way to prove that they did it...

Go back tomorrow, speak to the organ grinder and give them a chance to sort it would be my first plan of attack. Give them the chance to do the right thing before sounding off too; turning up with an attitude won't endear you to getting an amicable resolve.

Because whilst it's, to you, your P&J, to many who might work on it it's merely another car that provides their wages.
Don't assume all who work on cars are petrolheads.
To mitigate such as this a touch of psychology is useful.
If you're leaving your car for work, present it clean and polished, that suggests a caring owner and might mean care from those maintaining it.
To be really OCD, ask a manager to walk round the car when you leave it and agree it's condition.
Having said all this, anyone who works with wheels, alloy or steel, should never lay them face down.

Edit, sorted my crap quoting out.

That's the first constructive thing you've said- appreciate it.

I'll be all sweetness and light when I pop down- play the old 'I've been coming to you for years and have always been impressed/reccomended you...' card. See what they say and take it from there.

It's my OH who usually goes balistic with people when she feels she's been wronged...

This is really perceptive advice- the car, especially the wheels, was mucky as hell when I dropped it off. I do a lot of miles getting to and from work over tough roads and just hadn't had time to clean it. Still doesn't excuse what happened, as you say.

The same thing happened to me, at a national chain of garages (not KwikFit).

I went back and showed the manager, who accepted blame. I had to get the wheels refurbished at my expense and then send the receipt to the head office of the garage.

They paid up eventually, but it took a couple of months.

Overall I was happy with the way it was handled, but I haven't been back again.

That has given me some hope- cheers. I'm after the same outcome.

Don't think I'll be back regardless to be honest. Despite what I posted earlier, the time before last when I used them it was to fit 2 tyres and 1 was flat by the next morning (improperly sealed- you could actually HEAR the air escaping when inflated!), fixed it quickly, but these are schoolboy errors and do put you to some inconvenience...
