Bored of looking for one specific car that fits the bill because theyre arent many decent ones around.

Has to less than £1000
Insurance 7 or lower, 8 at an absolute maximum
Dont want something that the usual 18 year old drives.
Tax cant be too much either.

Thanks.

A classic as insurance will be cheaper, so you can go for a higher group. Or a Nissan Micra.

What about a ratty old Landy? It's different, no student will have one! My Disco is 1993, Full off road spec, limited 4x4 specialist insurance, 5k miles a year with NO commuting is £235 a year. I'm 27 and have a decent history, but the limited mileage and lack of commuting helps a lot - you don't use car to commute to uni i presume?

Go on, get a smelly old Disco. Take your mates to pay n play sites/ green lanes when you are bored. biggrin

Not going to Uni. Not so much a student anymore but still as skint:P Ill have a look at old Landys, whats the cut off age for classic car insurance?

I drive my car pretty much everyday. First year of driving was about 12000 miles, that will come down alot now as im over the fact that i can drive on my own whenever i want now. Untill i get a job but would still be considerably lower.

Re age have a look at the OP in the link I provided, Landies can be insured cheaply from what I've read. Think it has someting to do with repair costs per 17yr old driver.

You are going to have to resign yourself to something fairly old and not sporty for that kind of price. I used a Pug 306 sedan TD (don't laugh, it was cheap and I thought it looked quite good getmecoat)throughout university. It was not comically slow, handled pretty well and was reliable for a car with 150k on the clock. We bought it in 2001 with 100k-odd on the clock for about a grand (bargain smile) and other than the sunroof leaking like a sieve until I sealed it with bathroom sealant it was great. IG 9 IIRC, got 45-50 mpg motorway and about 30-35 round town.

You could probably get a phase 2/3 one ('97 on if memory serves) with the common rail diesel - personally I really liked the XUD9 in mine although it was pretty tractor-ish.

If you go classic/ specialist, like the Landy, then forget insurance groups. They will be much cheaper.

Call Adrian Flux and ask for a quote on a 200TDi Discovery, or even the V8. I bet my bottom dollar that if you can have limited usage, and no commuting, then you'll be surprised by the quote.

309 D.

Pick them up for under £300 (I bought one for £240 and it was immaculate and the engine was solid)

Boring, but it's a set of wheels that will get you around.

problem with classics is that you need a main car. Limited miles, 4x4 vehicle would be good. use the main ones when searching - admiral, a-plan, nig, adrian flux, sky (if modified) quinn direct; they all have their main markets and just by searching might save a fair whack on insurance

p.s whatever you do .. dont touch fiat hot hatches or fiestas at moment as they sem more expensive than anything.

ford Ka - ste washing machine engine at that money probably but the car is good.
or
ford fiesta 1.25 - looks crap but is basically the same and has much much sweeter engine. i used to have one and they're quite reasonable.
or
if you're really brave/unmoved by image the sensible money would probably go into a Micra!
engines are quite sweet. don't 'handle' as such but quite roll free compared to a polo of similar vintage. as a more 'appliance' type car i'd look at them. and apply some ironic features like a stick on carbon roof..!

This. I had a series 3 when I was a student and it was ace. Could get 7 of us in it when it was needed, parts were cheap, insurance was cheap and it was easy to work on. And they're very, very cool.

Much as the old Landrover idea has going for it, A Ford Ka would be a better idea. No one will argue that they are a hoot to drive. Also cheap tax, insurance and fuel costs.

One of those will see you through your student days the you can pick up something a little sharper
