Had a day out in a caterham. Eye opener or what?
Discussion
Wowzers these things are a bit hardcore aren't they? Even as a veteran driver of the already pretty uncompromising VX220 I found the experience a real eye opener. Unassisted brakes are definitely the way forward they were superb when up to temperature. 6 gears, 550 KGs and 150 BHP felt like a very rounded package.
Heres a pic of the little beast

Great ride though and it was surprisingly cheap to do!

Funnily enough, that's the main reason I bought an Elise rather than a VX220. But yes, every keen driver should drive a Caterham or similar at least once in their life. I considered one as a daily driver but eventually went for the soft option and bought my Elise.

As for riding a superbike well I would think a well set up Caterfield with any more than 250 BHP would dust a bike of any description on a typical A road!
I really want a Caterham. I'd love to build my own one at some point and I might do that after I've sorted out all these various 944s I've got lying around at the moment. I'm rebuilding most of one of them so it's good practice for when I can afford a kit.
Closest I've gotten so far is driving them on Race 07 but not quite the same. I'd love to go for a ride in one but I don't think my bank balance would feel the same afterwards.

Go ride a Superbike.
Then come back and tell us you're still impressed with a Lotus 7 replica.
What a pointless post. Then come back and tell us you're still impressed with a Lotus 7 replica.

We're talking about a day out in a roadsport, we're NOT comparing it to a superbike, so why bring that to the discussion?
Go over to the TT Car V's Bike thread if that's your bag.

There are plenty of other Seven kits out there you could look at if you fancy a self build, and for a fraction of the price too. Plus as well with a self build you can spread the cost as you wish - buy bits as and when you need them, and take as long as you like on the build.Closest I've gotten so far is driving them on Race 07 but not quite the same. It can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be, and the satisfaction you get (or terror!) from doing 0-60 in less than six seconds in something you glued together by yourself is hard to beat.

For reference, what is the straight-line pace of a roadsport 150? I mean, what other car would be comparable?
0-60 5.0s, 122mph top speed, but that sort of misses the point of 7s, their true ability lies in taking corners 10-15mph faster than you'd think possible.ApexJimi said:

Tricky one. The short ratio box I think makes it feel a tiny bit more manic than perhaps it is but I reckon it would live with something like a Z4M up to 60. It feels perfectly matched for normal road driving. Maybe I'm a chicken but you feel so exposed in the car that you're not left wanting to reduce the thinking time you have for corners any more thats for sure. What these CRS's and superlights are like on the road I can barely begin to imagine. Probably a bit of a nightmare!Edited by ApexJimi on Monday 28th June 20:31
