Daughter's Peugeot 206 lost the brake lining from the shoes of a rear drum, a common fault with bonded linings.

The drum was scored in the ensuing melee and we limped the car to the safest place we could think of on Saturday night, which happened to be a RapidQuickSuperSlick Fit place nearby. No names, but they don't charge peanuts.

They looked at it on Sunday and came back with a price of £612.

HO, HO, bloody HO...rofl

Don't laugh, but the repairs needed were...

Brake shoes x 2

Brake drums x 2 - 1 being slightly scored

Brake cylinders x 2 - both leaking and this caused the shoe linings to part company with the shoes on one side. roflOn inspecting the stripped down brakes, there was no sign of fluid anywhere.

Wheel bearings x 2 - one fell out of the drum on dismantling, so both needed to be replaced...roflOh, my aching ribs

On expressing deep amusement at the quoted £612, I was offered a discount to £five hundred and something.

No thanks, son, just put it back together...

Towed it with a rigid bar to a Peugeot independent.

He fitted new shoes, ground the damaged drum smooth, refitted the bearings and passed the cylinders fit.

For ....... £75

Guess who I'll not be using in future for tyres or anything...?

I noticed the other night that a certain national chain is offering free replacement brake pads/shoes for life when you buy a set from them. Anyone betting that a condition of the contract is that they are only available if the drums/discs are practically new, and that if they are marked then the garage must fit new ones?

Why, £10-£20 for a set of shoes the rest is labour for about an hour's work.

One wonders what you were thinking when you booked it in there. I thought the charging tactics of these particular chains were well known? As a PHer, accept your yellow card with grace smile

Also, I suspect they'll insist you pay for a new set of discs more regularly than is strictly necessary.

It was my daughter's car. It failed at 18.15hrs on Saturday night. The closest safe place to park it near a repairer was there. They were open on Sunday. They charge nothing for an inspection.

Am I excused...?
