A friend was complaining about the cost of insuring his son. So I worked up an example of a 17 year old driving a 1971 Fiat 500, value about £3k with 17bhp. The cheapest quote was £2k. The AA wanted £26k! For one year.

The 26k quote isn't an attempt at trying to be competative the premium is set so its too high in simple terms they are saying "your too much of a risk we don't want to insure you".

I had a 3 year old Clio when I passed my test, it was about £2300 to insure. I got quotes of up to £12,000. I also had a look at being the second driver on my parents car which was a little better than mine (okay a lot) and that got a highest quote of £46,000!

Through a classic company your theoretical teenager would be insured TPFT for well under a grand. I was on a Mini Cooper which is much more powerful than the Fiat mentioned.

Did you struggle to get a "Classic" policy at 17?

I paid around £850 for my first year on my 1.1 106 5dr when i was 19, about 4 years ago. That was TPF&F coverage though with the infamous Quinn Insurance. And judging by how massively they fked up my brother's non-fault accident claim (9 months for a resolution, which included complaints to the ombudsman) never EVER again. There is an element of you get what you pay for with insurance.

I was paying £3500 on my 1.6 C2 VTR @ 18 as my first car.. Then abit more than that as someone crashed into me but when the Policy was renewed it was still being diputed so a fault in my name.

Now the MX5 is £2500 @ 20 with 0 NCB.. Not bad, group 13 car and lots of fun.

I can afford it no problem though so am not bothered, I've a car I love and enjoy driving, where as friends have old bangers they don't love.

I don't drink, smoke, drugs.. Nothing, driving is my 'fix' so I'm fine with the cost that comes with it.

£2200 on a 900cc Corsa at the tender age of 17.

Biggest difference for me was moving, at 21 my insurance on the MINI was £1100 at my parents address or £300 in Oxford.

For my age, on an MX5.. With 0ncb?

I'm fine with £2500, I probably could have found some cheaper but my car was sold and needed some insurance smile

And you're 20? You're better off doing all of the above at 20, save the nice cars for when you're too old to go out and drink, smoke & do drugs hehe

Dont take this the wrong way but you really could have found insurance for cheaper than that,
One of my friends has just bought a 10 plate audi TT and he's 20 with motoring convictions and 1 year ncb and i helped him get a policy for £1800.

All you need to do is spend a day or searching all the insurers could save you £££'s.

Man, I'd refuse to pay over a grand for insurance [unless I could afford a fleet of supercars, then I guess insurance costs don't matter] - I'd feel like I'd just had my pants pulled down! I don't ever remember the insurance for my first car [Mk2 Golf 1.6, worth £3k, when I was 20] costing as much as some of you guys pay?

Now I'm 31, I get pissed off if I get quotes over £400!

I've only had the Policy 2 months, was just to get me some insurance until I found one cheaper to be honest but I just have been to busy to go through them all day. I'll take a day off and do it though smile
