Right so the standard story... I'm about to turn 18, I'd like to be the main driver in our 2008 skoda fabia 1.6, for the last year I was a named driver for £1200.
So now I'm looking at being the main driver in order to start building a no claims bonus. I've spent this morning calling the likes of Bell, Co-op insurance, adrian flux... All of which were about the £4000 mark, the cheapest so far is £2600 from quinn direct.

So my question, anyone know of or recommend anywhere to look that like younger drivers, or who people have got reasonable quotes with?

I really don't fancy paying anything over £1500, so it looks like I'm just going to have to remain as a named driver, and before you start shouting fronting, don't because I'm not.

So anyone know of any companies that may provide cheaper quotes?

Some companies let you build NCB up as a name driver. I'm a named driver with Tesco, I think, and I'm getting NCB's. That should be your best bet.

I found Endsleigh very good, particularly if you are a student. Insurance on a new(ish) car is always going to be ahole damaging though.

In those cases (Usually Direct Line policies) the NCB you build up is only recognised by the company offering it. E.g. If you have 5 years "Named Driver NCB" and want to switch to "A.N & Other insurance co" you'll have no NCB as far as A.N & Other are concerned.

Ahh. There we go then, not as great as it seems, but still worth a shot.

Yeah this is what I already have through privilege, but its useless for any other company, and even with them they want £5000 for me to main driver.

Yeah, that was my first call, a lot of the wouldn't even quote due to my age though, and the rest all wanted above £3000 frown

PV i do feel for you with that insurance bill, there isn't much leeway for the quotes, it is worth looking through the recent young driver insurance threads they have some good explanations/tips. I did try to summarise on another thread.

i said on another thread said:
There are masses of insurance threads on here. A quick summary off the top of my head.

Reasons it can be expensive:
New Driver.
Common new driver car = higher risk.
Postcode
Options looked at (parked in garage vs on road, legal protection, voluntary excess)
Insurance companies paying out on average £1.40 for every £1.00 they recieve in premiums so insurance seems to have gone up for lots of people recently.

Suggestions:
Call around, i mean call everybody. My first call got me my cheapest quote last time i renewed, i still called about 25 companies.
Put others on the policy having you, your mother, your dad, your gran, and anyone else may make lots of difference. And no matter how rude you feel they will keep re-quoting it for you as you run through all your family members, that is their job. Do NOT insure it yourself under someone elses name i'm sure you have seen what happens if accused of fronting on PH
Try Diamond/Elephant/Admiral they have a very good rep for new drivers, and will offer acclerated NCB schemes.
Up the volutary Excess and get pass plus'd if possible.

Im sure others with better knowledge will be along to help soon. biggrin
ETA to fix my useless copy/paste skills.

Thanks for that, the quotes I'm getting have both my parents on, and still are ridiculous! It seems it's the car that's the issue, and there's very little I can do about that. frown

WHY?

if you are in a position to consider spending £1500-2000 on insurance buy a £500 1.0L something for a year rather than drive a nearly new 1.6.

Well the car is owned by my parents who pay the insurance too I'm afraid.

its been mentioned in the past but try and get something that most teenagers dont have so that you don't fit into their stereotype risk.

tesco are sometimes good - for my brothers (named drivers aged 18 & 20) and me when I was 24 a Mini one was £900 all in which was pretty good!

I'm looking at getting a run around but because i've used up my no claims on my other car they are quotting me £1000+ for a used corsa 1.4 (group 4) which is mad when my audi TT (group 19) is costing me £750! (I'm 25 btw). They just say that there are a lot of under 25s crashing corsas and fiestas but not so many 25 year olds crashing TT's...

Get something a bit different and it might work out cheaper and if it's a cheaper car then you could even lower it further by going for 3rd party F&T?

I'm really getting fed up with this now, haven't had a quote below £4000 for quite some time now, tesco's cheapest was £7000!!! but that's because they think my numberplate is on an octavia, which every other comparison site knows it isn't. I tried a quote on an old fiesta 1.2 just to compare, and that came in a smidge over £3000! I hate being young and into cars. frown

Looks like I'll just have to settle for being named driver for another year. And no it won't be fronting, I'll be off to uni and I'll just not come home to use the car very often. frown

If you can it may be worth buying a complete heap that you can insure for as little as possible and keeping it off road for a year. But NCB doesn't make that much of a difference until you are well into your twenties.
And start checking out non young driver cars, i seem to remember someone on here talking about a rover 623/620ti that they insure for less than their mates corsas due to it being a lower liability (but much nicer) car, I used to work with a 19yo who had a VW Sharan that he insured for half of what i was paying at the time and at 21 one of my best mates got a Volvo V70 2.5, it cost less than his Clio 1.4 to insure.
