Discussion
Hi
I'm after some part worns to put on my rover coupe-dont laugh.
I'm thinking i could get some better tyres as part worns rather than some ditch chuckers for the same price. I only do abot 3 or 4k a year in the coupe.
Does anyone have any knowledge of any good pplaves to buy part worn's.

Ive never had any problems with part worn tyres on my daily driver. I know of a good place inChelmsford if thats near to you. The fix any punctures you get for free and on the off chance there is a fault they replace no questions. Ive had one changed out of the 10 tyres I have bot from them.
Currently got 4x micheline pilots on all bot with about 5mm tread on them for the gran total of £140 which is just over the cost of a single new tyre.
You will get replies about dangerous dont know history etc but its quite easy to check before you buy for any sidewall damage etc.
I'd much rather buy used than chinese ditch finders

look for a place that does this on mass, they generally get the tyres from Germany where the limit is 3-3.4mm? Ok it's not as safe as buying new but I like you would rather have a worn quality tyre than a new but budget one.
The Treadshop in Chichester is a place i've used and would recommend.

Don't forget that every secondhand car comes with a set of at least 4 part worn tyres
. What did the previous owner do with/to those tyres?
Thats true, I tend to buy new ones but I dont think every single tyre should be binned, ok if its damaged then it needs to go in the bin but to be honest the fact its "part worn" and is being swapped before its considered done means it gets more of an inspection than most tyres do, how often do your current tyres come off so you can see inside ?
. What did the previous owner do with/to those tyres?I would take a set of decent brand part worns over some Linglongs or Nankangs.
Saying if you cant afford new tyres you should be on a the Bus is a bit off, there are plenty of responsible motorists on a budget doing the best they can, go to a tyre place and see some of the ragged, bald examples that come off some high end cars, and only then because the owner has had to take it in for an MOT or a puncture.
Tyres are generally pretty simple, if the look ok, no bulges or rips, plenty of tread and are appropriate for the car then I dont see a problem. Plus its recycling in action.

They all had between 6-7mm of tread on them & cost £30 per tyre for Continental Contact Sports.
They come off written off, or scrapped cars. Tyres that fail inspections, or have been previously repaired cannot be sold.
If they are out of date, then the side walls would be heavily perished, or they'd have a monumental flat spot from being sat so long.
I never had any issue & sometimes it's handy of you can find a similarly worn tyre for a 4wd car with a Haldex Diff. Certainly beats forking out for a set of 4 every time you get an unreparable puncture, or your geometry is out & chews a tyre within 6000miles.

Second hand cars come as road worthy cars.
. What did the previous owner do with/to those tyres?Part worn tyres are not on a car for a reason. In some cases, the reason is because the cars have been written off. Internal tyre structure can be damaged without any major marks on the outside.

You don't know if the previous owner has hit one too many potholes, or ridden up the kerbs. You could just replace every tyre, for peace of mind. But you probably wouldn't

I'd like to think there are laws in place that would prevent the resale of a tyre that has been involved in a cat A/B accident.

Bloody hell there's some tosh spoken on this subject: just about every single car, lorry and bus that you have seen today is, unless it's just rolled out of Kwik-Fit/the showroom, running around on "part worn tyres", tyres that have hit drain covers, bumped over potholes and kerbs and maybe rubbed against a kerb. Gosh! The risk! The horror! Or is it? I don't see all these vehicles have their tyres randomly explode as they drive along.
Last year I got my first ever pair of part worns - I was about to get some new rears (285s on 18 inch rims) and for premium tyres like Michelins or Contis you're talking over 300 quid each. Then at the last minute I spotted a place online. Got a pair of what to me looked like brand spanking new (nearly 8mm tread all over) Conti Sport Contact 3s for 250 the pair fitted (on the poshest tyre machine I've ever seen), balanced, inc VAT etc. They really were indistinguishable from new. No idea where they cae I can well afford new ones, but that's at least 350 notes saved on two tyres - not to be sniffed at. I'd definitely go to the same place again.
Oh, and I'm not dead.
ETA: I'd probably not bother for 100 quid a corner stuff, not least cos unless you're lucky you don't get a choice of rubber, but for a saving like I made then it's definitely worth the bother.

I would guess that like grade A goods the part worns have gone through an extra quality control step, and from a reputable supplier you are likely to get a better tyre for less money. After all a long established place has a reputation to maintain. Think how many people on here recommend swapping both tyres on an axel or even a full set if a single tyre needs replacing, by my maths that means 1, 3, or possibly 4 if they do the spare as well.
