Remember the game Sega Rally, the main protaganists being the hallowed Lancia delta Integrale and the Toyota Celica GT4.

Now, like any car enthusiast I have a soft spot from the Integrale, they just look so right, only ever been in the original 8 valve but it left an impression, no experience of driving one and have never driven that era Celica of any type but always found them alluring and the thought that they may be a little less "Italian" in certain departments added to the allure.

So, where are they now ?, the Integrale was in Autocar the other day getting a glittering write up, price wise they are going Stratos-pheric (sorry) at up to 30 grand but the poor old Celica with which it shared the early nineties arcade scene on equal billing, is now seemingly fairly unloved apart from its owners club, the best of the best (well, the most expensive on Ebay, big assumption there) lurking round for under (well under in some cases) five grand like faded stars doing reality tv for a few quid, is the Celica really Timmy Mallet to the "Grales" Kylie Minogue ?

All down to image I'm afraid, the Italian fantasy plays better than the Japanese one, regardless of the reality. Though I remember reviews at the time thought the GT-Four a little sterile and almost too good.

Having owned a 205 I can tell you they still stack up againt today's rally reps very well. But that's over-engineered 90s Toyotas for you.

The HF is no doubt a great car but one is bought to store & drive and the other own.

i don't think the celica GT4 was as successful, and with it toyota eventually got banned from rallying for the variable restrictor they made. Interestingly the wiki enntry on the car whilst being quite detailed doesn't seem to mention that..

I have a massive "thing" for the GT4, saw a lad in a black one at an Oulton Park Drift day, he was geting some obscene angles and it was doing the whole popping thing.

I can see why the Integrale is dearer, I remember those reviews, and there is a bit of a whiffy image with the whole Jap import thing, thought the GT4 was quite a classy thing when new, kind of respectable, middle class sporty, before Audi really nailed it.

But is an Integrale worth 5 or 6 times more ?

Something is only worth what people will pay, so the answer is yes. Is it 5 or 6 times the car? No.

But also available as an official UK car, long before the Lancer too. Interesting that Escort Cosworth prices haven't really picked up much yet. An early Twin Cam or good Mk 2 is worth more than a Cosworth.

I'd say there are alot more Cosworths around in the UK than there are Intergrales though..

The Sega Rally arcade cabinets at my local pool hall used to have a design fault, whereby if you held full lock to the left when inserting your 50p you could play unlimited times for as long as you liked until they reset the machine at night. I clocked up many hours on that game.

That game played a major part in getting me interested in cars. Still want an Integrale partly for that reason (had the next best thing, but not close enough). I also managed to get a top 10 ten time on the desert course in C&VG magazine. Great times, still have a copy of it and a Saturn to play it on in my parent's loft
