Evening gentlemen (let's face it there's no girls on the internet)
The mrs is looking for a new vehicle and, as we have just had the twins taking our brood up to 4 (now officially a horde) we are looking for a 7 seater.
So far the Kia sedona seems to be our best bet as we only have about 3-4k to spend on it. It'll be used as a shopping bus/school run/day tripper. I'm off to look at a few this weekend and was hoping those of you in the know would be able to tell me what to look out for?

I had a 06 plate Diesel Auto

Although a very comfortable and practical car, the interior plastics are crap, mine did about 22mpg and had 6 (yes 6) ETAC units replaced under warranty (all the electrics would pack up bar the engine, not good when driving at night).

So i got rid

-Kia Seconda 36mpg combined

Perhaps consider other 7 seaters as well before commiting.

-Ford galaxy (36mpg combined)

-VW Sharan (36mpg combined)

-Renault Grande Espase (39mpg combined)

-Renault Grand Senic (38mpg Combined)

-VW Touran (47mpg combined)

All have 7 seats and all can be had for £4000 or under. The also look a bit better than the Seconda (IMO). Good for the shopping at they (all?) have 7 fixed seats rather than 5 seaths then 2 in the boot that fold up lite in the zafira etc.

I know my uncle has had 2 galaxies and hasn't moaned about it and from what i remember its roomy inside.

Just as a side note all the ones i've mentioned are faster to 60 and have a higher top speed than the Seconda. I know these aren't exactly a vital statistics as its to be used as a shopping wagon and child transporter but i'd have thought a slightly faster vehicle will make motorway journeys more bareable.

A friend has one as he has loads of kids. We call him a Kia Sad owner.
Its been nothing but trouble (mostly cooling), he hates it and is selling soon.
Do you want to buy it?

My Dad had one for about a month, it was comfy and did the job but was quite thirsty and rolled like a boat from what I remember. He's got a VW Touran now and although a bit smaller it seems like a much better all rounder.

What about a 6 seater? How much are those Honda FR-V things these days? Someone I used to know had one and seemed to think it was pretty good.

My cousin's got one and it's truly horrible. The diesel engine sounded/felt very agricultural and the interior was plasticky and felt really cheap.

In contrast, the Galaxy I bought my wife 3 years ago is a much better bit of kit. Ours is a 2001 Mk2 with the VAG 115pd TDI engine (which I've had cheekily remapped to about 145 bhp). It's refined (in diesel terms anyway), looks better, is much quicker and returns decent mpg numbers even when I'm going for it. It's got 155k miles on it now and is still running fine. Probably worth about £2000 now, so easily in your budget.

If you absolutely have to get a people carrier, I'd definitely recommend the Galaxy.

If you want a sh*t people carrier, then one that's a bit better (& cheaper) than a Sedona is a Hyundai Trajet.

Used to sell 'em and the CRTD is not a bad drive, and the are much more hard wearing than the Sedona.

I hired one of these for a climbing trip to Wales and it is a shockingly bad car, the thing I hated most though is the stupid foot operated hand brake they have positioned next to the clutch pedal, and to release it you have to pull something under the steering wheel. Stupid thing.

Wouldn't be of huge concern to me but might be if you've got kids. IIRC correctly the Sedona got 2 star Euro NCAP? As did the Voyager, worse than a Saxo hehe

NCAP Link

Just checked and it did; pretty terrible.

Thanks for all the feedback so far guys, I think I have managed to sway her away from the kia, after reading all this. Might just buy an old mitsubishi pajero 7 seater, if she insists on a people carrier I'll try convince her to go galaxy.

Esapce is not a bad shout either. Much nicer driving experience and ours was not too bad, especially compared with the Merc that I now have. Only st part was the dealers, and at £4k your into indie land anyway.

My wife has a sedona, and apart from the basic interior (she did get the built in DVD player, though) and the "it's not a sports car round the corners" ride, it's been fine for the 65000 miles it's done so far, only things that have ever gone wrong were the aircon failed (fixed under warranty) and at 63000 miles one of the gear lever linkages broke (£200 to fix).

Economy - 36 to the gallon, round town which is what it does mostly.

The interior is cheap plastic but anything better would be wrecked by the kids.

She chose it for a few reasons:

The chrysler voyager we tried was worse to drive
It has sliding doors (we didn't want kids opening doors on to other cars when parked up)
It has a space between the seats so that she can get through to the back if need be.

If you are happy to have something that you will never love, it's fine. It's not a drivers car. It is handy if you occasionally need a small van as with all the seats out it's quite a decent size load space. Be warned though - taking the seats out is a non-trivial task, they are heavy.

Have to say I was well impressed with the rental Espace IV I had a few years ago in France, it was actually quite fun to hustle compared to the soul destroying Sadowner I'd had before.

Galaxy was also pretty good, fair bit sharper to drive but with the ride to match, so the Espace just seemed to make more sense to me. It also just had a bit more joi de vivre, and generally a bit of a happier place to be. If I had too many children, I wouldn't begrudge ferrying the screaming brats around as much.

My only fear would be owning a Renault and all of the issues that go with running a car built by the french and serviced by cretins. The dash was a bit flakey too, but interiors have never been high on my agenda.
