"As production of the Bugatti Veyron winds toward its eventual conclusion, Bugatti has created what is likely to be the ultimate version of its world-beating hypercar: the Super Sports. Bugatti sent its official test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel out on Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessian high-speed oval with the first Super Sports to see just what it could do. With representatives of the Guinness book of records and German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV) on hand, Raphanel made passes around the big oval in both directions.

With output bumped up from 1,001 horsepower to 1,200 horsepower, torque swelling to 1,106 pound-feet and a revised aerodynamic kit, Raphanel managed runs of 265.9 and 269.8 mph for an average terminal velocity of 267.81 mph and a new world record for a production car.

The first five production Super Sports will sport the same black and orange finish as the record car and all production models will be electronically limited to 257.9 mph to protect the tires. The Veyron Super Sports will be publicly shown for the first time at the Pebble Beach in August."

Not a car I've really been into but you cannot deny that it is damn impressive.

That top speed from a road going production car is outstanding.

It also claims the little oft contested "Worlds Fastest Jaffa Cake" title too!

would sound good but I wouldn't want a blow out at that speed...

Squeezing near enough 270mph out of that is just daft! It's got to be tempting to them or others to try and eek out that last 30 mph!

I see your point, but it's not "eeking" it out as such, is it?

It's taken 200BHP and revised aero for an extra 15 odd mph. The jump to 300 mph is huge. How much more power can they get from the engine? Can they keep it cool enough if they get the power from it?

There's huge diminishing returns as far as I can remember, when you get to those speeds - what's the equation for the power/aero/speed ratio - doesn't the power required cube every X mph - or something?

I'm not sure on the exact maths, but that's exactly what I was getting at. Going off what they've done here, they'd need another 400 odd BHP without taking any diminishing returns into account. So probably more than that.

Now let’s go from the sublime to the ridiculas. The Americans are at it again trying to get one over on the Veyron. I must admit the styling is very nice but the performance claims are just a complete joke:

The Dagger GT has over-the-top ambitions of becoming the most sinister production car ever built. Only five will be manufactured in 2011 and all but two have been pre-sold. U.S. based TranStar Racing says its design is based on the Corvette Cheetah concept and vows to break every major record, from being the fastest on a straight line to being the quickest around the Nurburgring.

But what credentials does it bring to the fore? For starters, TransStar Racing lists a "who's who" of U.S. auto industry veterans. From award winning engineers and race car builders to NASA aerodynamicists and the designer of the Saleen S7, the TranStar team reaches into almost every corner.

For hardware, TranStar proposes a 572 multifuel (petrol/methanol/hydrogen/ethanol) twin turbo racing unit from Nelson Racing Engines (builders of the 1800hp Mosler Red Devil) which is capable of spewing out a seemingly insurmountable 1,491 kW (2,000 bhp / 2,028 PS). Peak torque is said to be 2,710Nm (2,000 lb-ft) running through a TranStar/Mendeola 6-speed transmission.

Expected performance figures are equally astounding: 0-60 mph in 1.5 seconds, quarter mile in less than 6.7 seconds and a top speed of over 483 km/h (300mph). The outer body is made from carbon fibre, while a high-strength 4130 Chromoly Steel chassis forms the inner structure.

Three different models can be ordered: a hard-core racer, a street-legal sport version and a soft-riding luxurious GT-X that combines both speed and comfort.

Following the first five contract units, sales will begin during the first half of 2011 for 10 units to be delivered in 2012 and each car is priced at a minimum of US$450,000 (€360,000).

laugh I suppose that's the rose tinted specs view of sale figures.

If they were making 100 and all but 2 had sold, it would make sense.
