Yes its another What Car? thread. Probably my upteenth in recent times but then again I'm soon to be on my 3rd car this year.

However, this time the choice is much broader. I am now at an age where insurance matters much less. Its not cheap yet, but most things decent are now at the £800-£1k mark.

So, what am I after? Well, I have looked into pretty much everything - from Clio 172s to BMW 7ers so am very open to all suggestions. It has to provide a decent level of comfort and be relatively modern - late 90s onwards.

Current thoughts are E36/9 28i. Oh and budget around £2k but preferably below! Fuel consumption not too important but the less scary, the better!

I've looked at that a few times, although the 'R' reg plate threw me. I've been lead to beleive that all pre- S reg cars are nikasil, so didnt get to the bottom of the ad. okgo is quite well known around these parts. The spec looks good too, I very much like the seats.
Although with this:

still around, there is still quite a bit of choice.

That Alfa does look nice. Will it drive and feel anywhere near as good as the BMW though?

No idea, but I think it would get my vote over the Bimmer

my vote would not go to the bimmer, not THAT bimmer anyway, bit old manish the bogo e39, without the facelift and bodykit it looks abit pants IMO, id much rather go for a e36 or that alfa is lovly, I remember when we had one in as Part ex. and it sounded awsome. i have a 325 and love it btw

In case its not clear, it really can be anything. The BMWs are just an idea. Saab 95s, Volvo S60s, even Jags could be contenders...

I have driven both of these and without a doubt the BMW is more robust and solid and will have a smoother ride over bad roads and you'll waft along whilst also being a good car into the corners.

The 156 is a good ride, a bit more unsettled on potholed roads and not nearly as robust as the BMW. But what it lacks in comparable build quality it does make up for in character and style.

Tough choice on those 2, I like both smile

Continuing the Alfa theme above: 145 Cloverleaf?

Reasonable amount of grunt, nice engine, said to be a match for cars like the GTi6 dynamically and you can get toys like AC and leather, which should make it quite a nice place to be. Plus, it's an Alfa.

Find yourself a nice Jaguar XJ12 in an XJ40 bodyshape. No TCS just and LSD. 6.0 litres of silky smooth V12 wallop and an interior good enough to embarrass a new 5 Series in terms of style and character.
