Another leccy car themed thread
Discussion
I was pleasantly surprised that Goodwood had a good turn out of leccy cars (london black cab was great!) for all it means that we should have a viable electric technology filter down to the masses sooner, rather than later.
I firmly believe that electric is better than petrol in every performance related way (oodles of torque, no need for a gearbox, less to rbeakdown, more compact) if you disregard the energy sotrage issue that is.
I honestly cannot wait to get my hands on a light 4 engined electric performance car, which stores the same energy per cubic cm as petrol and am convinced it's only a matter of time.
But hearing a mclaren pull away with apocalyptic noise, followed by a completely silent but still impressively fast eelctric car it felt like someone has pressed the mute button on my telly. I suppose we will all get used to the lack of noise eventually and will still seek to have the old school petrol weekend toy. but cycling into work this morning and avoiding a pedestrian who was crossing the road diagonally and facing away from me, relying on his hearing to tell if there is a car on the road made me wonder just how many fatalities we will have on the roads when silent cars are more commonplace? I know someone suggested artificial noise generator fitted to all electric cars to combat that, but that idea is just naff...

I assume from that last line you didn't venture onto the Lotus stand and investigate their concept hybrid Evora? It sounded like a hi-tech 'Stang, but not a V8 in sight.GKP said:

so you are saying they managed to make it emanate a sound and not sound just needlessly stupid?
You should have asked me for a Demo of the 414E's system!
It's in very early stages of development, but it the tones sound pretty convincing to me, and we didn't have the best 'voices' available loaded onto the car. The speakers are even bolted directly to the chassis, so you can feel the body tingling like a real car when it's running.
The only thing that needs a bit more work are the 'gear changes' IMHO.
