New Veyron Super Sport Hits 268mph

A Bugatti is once again the fastest car in the world

A new 1200hp Veyron has reclaimed the 'fastest car in the world' crown for Bugatti, setting an average top speed of 268mph.

The car - the long-awaited Bugatti Veyron Super Sport - set the new record at VW's Ehra-Lessien test facility near Wolfsburg on Saturday afternoon, with Bugatti test driver, Pierre Henri Raphanel, at the wheel.

"We took it that we would reach an average value of 425 km/h (264 mph), but the conditions today were perfect and allowed even more," said Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, Bugatti's chief engineer.

The 1200hp, 1106lb ft Super Sport gets its extra 200hp and 184lb ft via four enlarged turbochargers and larger intercoolers for the 16-cylinder engine.

To cope with the extra poke, the Veyron Super Sport also has slightly raised main-spring travel, stiffer anti-roll bars and new shock absorbers. The body gets roof-mounted NACA ducts rather than air scoops, a double diffuser at the rear, and a centrally mounted exhaust.

Road cars won't be able to quite maximise the Veyron's potential ghowever - Bugatti has limited these to 'just' 258mph.

The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport will make its in-the-metal debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California this August.

Up yours SSC, with your hideous looking Ultimate Aero.

Now it's not only ugly, it's not even the fastest.

It seems somehow right that the fastest production car is from a 'proper' manufacturer and not a shed built special.

Halfords special paint job actually suits the car.

sleep how pointless is this becoming, I'd say strap a rocket to it and be done with it but then they'd say how about two!

Not sure if it a good car (and I will probably never will), but what an amazing achievement by the engineers on this project.

Nice marketing idea to launch the car after it has set the record. Although it was even cleverer to pre-sell at least five of them before that... (read this on another site).

Given that it was always claimed the original's 1000hp was conservative, someone needs to get one of these on a (heavy duty) rolling road.

Top trumps card biggrin

Anybody any idea what the W16 would churn out without the quad turbo's?

This made me chuckle. Full throttle through second and third must be incredible. Not sure about the paint job though.

Yup, that Ultimate Aero sure is ugly!! I wouldn't want one, even if it was free. Some shed built special eh!! Never mind, give me about £100,000,000, and I'll build a Veyron rival. Simples.

wether you like the Veyron or not, you have to hand it to Bugatti for their technical achievments.

Amazing, that is incredibly fast, on a straight road you could London to Edinburgh in about 90 minutes or so....thats about as quick as flying takes (if you dont count check-in)

why trim the last 10mph off the road version? stability issues?

Exactly.

It is a great piece of utterly pointless design though smile

Damn it. Does this mean my boggo Veyron is no longer the fastest in the world (I don't count the SSC, dahling)?

By the way, talking of 300mph... yet another pretender to the throne... 2000bhp, 300+mph , though as with the SSC, I doub't it will be as easy to drive to the gentlemans club as the bug.
