I've just bought a BMW M3 which is on its original plate, PL53 ***

I want to buy and put a personalised plate on the car, something like M3 ***

I've seen one I liked on the DVLA website but am very confused about the process.

If I buy the plate, which is £250 including VAT and £80 Transfer Fee, do I have to put the original plate, PL53 *** on retention, or do I only need to do tis if I plan to sell the car at a later date with the original plate. I'm not really bothered about keeping it - but not sure if I need too.

So if I buy the plate, do I have to wait until I get the full V5C in my name, before I can send off the paperwork? The Tax is valid on the car until Dec 2010 but the MOT is due at the end of August, so what is the best way to do it? Should I get a new MOT first, or get the transfer done and then do MOT?

Do I have to tell my insurance company of the change?

I want the plate on the car as soon as possible, so dont want delays.

As above, don't bother. It'll just make you look a bit of a cock.

I speak from experience, my M5 came with an M5 plate, I just found it embarassing tbh.

TBH if your eyesight is that bad that you need to put a plate that says m3 xxx on your car i suggest surrendering your licence.

Amazingly not everyone cares that you drive an m3 and if they were in the least bit interested they would look at the badge on the back that was put there by bmw that says funnily enough M3.

I saw "M3CYA" the other week (on an actual M3).

I was really impressed. Then I found myself feeling strangely doubtful about my own self esteem, and spent some time afterwards questioning my worth as a human being. I did not hold up well in the inevitable comparison with the M3 driver. I think in all honesty i have under achieved in life.
