Ford Fiesta Mark 4 help please.
Discussion
I wonder if anyone might be able to help?
I have a 1999 Mark 4 Ford Fiesta, well it's actually a MAzda 121, but it's a badge engineering special, and is a Fiesta with Mazda badges.
Anyway, I was driving normally the other day when it just cut out on me dead, as dead as if I'd just switched the ignition off completely. Plenty of fuel in there, but it didn't hesitate, lose power or splutter. Just from working fine to dead in about a second.
Basic investigations revealed an intermittent spark at the plugs. Turn the engine over, and you get a spark for about a second and then it disappears. When you turn it over, the engine fires briefly for about half a second and then nothing, just turns over and over with no hint of firing at all.
I have changed the crank sensor for a known good one, no dice.
Plugging it into an OBD machine revealed a fault code for the coil pack. However, changing the coil pack hasn't helped at all, it still has exactly the same symptoms.
I've checked all the under bonnet connections, and used a jump lead to connect the engine casing to the bodyshell in case it was a bad earth. Again, nothing doing.
Removing the air intake, turning it over and spraying easy start into the inlet does nothing either. The fuel pump primes when you first turn the key like it should, and removing an injector sees plenty of fuel spraying out, so I think we can rule out the fuel side of things.
I don't think it's an immobiliser fault, (which is the factory system) becasue this disables the started motor as well when it cuts in. I know this because I have a spare key who's internal chip isn't programmed into the ECU, so when you try and start the car with this key, nothing happens at all apart from the immobiliser lamp flashing on the dash to indicate the key isn't recognised.
So it looks like the ignition side of things. As I said, new crank sensor and coil didn't work, and I think if it was engine temp sensor or MAF, it would at least start in limp home mode.
I'm not sure where to look next, maybe just a dead ECU on the ignition side?
Any pointers would be helpful, also, does anyone know where the ECU is located on these?
The system is Ford EEC IV.
Thanks in advance!
