What estate: Peugeot 406 vs Skoda Octavia

Has anyone had any experience of either? I have never dared bought French but heard these are sturdy and go on, many taxis seem to be Pug 406s.

I need a car as a family workhorse. 4 people will use it, lugging stuff to uni, tip, football and dumping at the station.

What should I watch for, what should I go for.
