Spyker Completes Buy-Out Of Saab

Dutch supercar firm hands over final $24m to The General

Dutch supercar maker Spyker is finally fully installed in the driving seat at Saab after completing the final $24m payment to purchase the Swedish maker from General Motors.

The money has changed hands 10 days earlier than originally planned, as Spyker has been able to get find extra capital in the wake of getting hold of Saab Great Britain, Saab's British subsidiary.

"The early payment of the second and last instalment underlines our desire to finalize the transaction with GM as soon as it was possible, enabling management to fully focus on the future of the group," said Spyker CEO Victor Muller in a statement to the press.

Spyker has paid $74 million for Saab - a tiny proportion of the cash GM has invested over the course of its two decades in charge of the brand. Some consolation for GM, however, is that Spyker-Saab is offering it $326 million in preferred stock options.

Sounds like good news to me! I hope they can pull it off.

Saw an Ad for the new 9-5 I believe last night, was quite surprised to see it so soon. Didnt GM sell the rights to that model to a Chinese firm? So who owns that now, both of them? Or have Spyker missed out on that?

No it was the outgoing 9-5 they sold the rights to.

Ah I see, so the new model's ready for production then? Any idea on how long its going to take Spyker to get the lines rolling again or is everything already in place?

As far as I know its rolling now - check the latest Evo for a fairly glowing review.

Do you really think that or are you just trolling?

If you're not trolling, why are they hideous and why should they have sunk without trace?

I have seen the new 9-5 in the flesh.Photos don't do it justice,it's the best looking car in its segment, classy, understated and just a hint of aggression. No sub-40k 5-Series,XF,A6,E-Class comes close to it...

Hopefully more business for UK Plc as Spykers are all made here now, so hopefully the UK Car component industry will lobby Spyker hard to supply future models. Well Done Spyker as SAAB is a brand worth saving.

No it doesn't. Saab hasn't made a good looking car since the 900.

Apparently it's a pudding to drive, like a big Vauxhall, so business as usual.

The Jaguar XF and the Germans are way ahead in this segment.

...or any of the papers who've tested it, or Auto Express, or Top Gear magazine, or What Car.

Only Car slagged it off, but only because they're the most irrational, biased, frustrating car magazine to read in the world, largely because they'll hand out the same star-ratings across the board, revealing Audis, Alfas, Saabs and BMWs to be broadly similar in ability, appeal, quality and value for money, but somehow can't break out of the conformity that forces them to declare that the German cars are best regardless of what their apparently impartial test tells them, so will tell you not to buy cars that they actually think are OK if you read their review in-depth, and will then pile on the hate to justify their prejudice.

Got given a free copy of Car once. I think I'll turn it down next time.

Autocar gave it 3.5 stars, hardly glowing and The Telegraph say it isn't a patch on the cars I mentioned.

I'm not aware of a review of it in Top Gear magazine.

Odd reaction to Car magazine. I think it has got better, at least when I picked it up.

TBH as much as I like Saab, I wasn't expecting it to be much cop either, but the number of favourable reviews I've heard about it out-number the poor ones. That said I think I'd still take an XF over anything else.

Oh and the new 5 GT and A6 both got 3.5 stars by Autocar as well wink

From what I have read for most of the reports & road tests, S/S gave them the super dog dangles 4x4 version rather than a boggo 2.0tdi rep special. Bit like only sending out the S4 when you launch the A4 so stands to reason it will have tested well in some places.
As always with the 9-5 the estate will be a far better seller than the saloon. The new car estate version is supposed to be huge and might well sell a few.
Shame they didn't bring it out for Goodwood. Odd that. Either means they haven't got the money to do Goodwood, think its so good they don't need to worry, think Saab buyers don't go to Goodwood or its not very good and they didn't want it to be shown up. (well I didn't see it or a Saab stand.)

Said it before on here, the Saab fans who want it will buy it. Clarkson will call it an Insignia in drag. They will not make any conquest sales. Saab will go the same way as Rover in about two years. All Spyker have done is delay the inevitable (and no doubt pulled in some nice directors salaries on the taxpayer.).

It's totally pointless to criticize the new 9-5 on the grounds of its looks. It's not like the competition is that inspiring. The current E-series is horrendously ugly (hate those stupid headlights and rear wheelarches), A6 is very boring (except the Avant which I can forgive the front). While not ground-breaking 5-series manages to be still fresh, although it's got a bottom-feeding look up-front.

It's only the Jag that's anywhere near good-looking and that's let down by crude headlights.

Given the competition, the 9-5 looks attractive enough and fresh. I've only read Telegraph's review and it's a shame if they've really messed up chassis setup and if the seats aren't great anymore. I would guess that past Saab buyers would be interested in the new one, but not if the core selling points are squandered.
