E36 gear shift pattern
Discussion
Does an E36 BMW have reverse in an odd/unusual place?
There reason I ask is that I was in a queue today a ways back from the traffic lights the one in front of me. When the lights went green it looked like he hadn't been watching and had forgot to put her in gear. Then he was rummaging around looking for a gear and found reverse. The reversing lights went out, then back on again as he reversed a few feet toward me

. If I remember rightly, it is like where first is, but you push it extra hard and it clicks on to reverse gear. If that makes any sense at all. So you would move the stick horizontally left, which would put it underneath first, and you would push it again and it would click into the reverse bit, and then push it up for reverse.
If it's an idiot with an auto, you might find them shifting into park at lights, and park passes through the Reverse position.
In between these, there are various locks to avoid knocking it into gears, so it'll often click into park or neutral by pushing the lever, but need the trigger/button pulled to get it into a moving gear.
The extra shifting isn't needed, and BMW recommend you sit in drive with your foot on the brake
It's all to do with fluid patterns, and a good few mechanics have found out that after revving the balls off a car in neutral, clearing out the throttle or whatever they were doing, they end up with no forward gears working.
If it's a manual, reverse is it the left and up position, similar to first, but stiffer to get it, so maybe that had more weetabix than usual, and forget to compensate!

Unfamiliar with an auto maybe?
I don't think it was an auto, but it did cross my mind. There was no reversing light flicker that you get when an auto goes through reverse. The car was a very, very clean one, like it really had been loved, but the guy was quite old.
