Took my 328i Coupe to a bodyshop that I have used before for a quote on a partial respray.

Its a rare colour but relatively straightforward to match as its only been produced in one shade, was happy to be guided by them in terms of what would be needed and told them that I wanted a top job and therefore did not expect the quote to be particulary low.

After a week and a half of phoning them to chase the quote I have been told that they are not confident of being able to do the work to the standard that I want (a match to the existing paint and a factory fresh appearance). Only one tiny dent would need removing, no rust, simply a repaint of panels that are showing signs of its 12 years.

Feel that I have had a lucky escape but also wasted getting on for two weeks in finding a bodyshop that can do a good job at a fair price

Im sorry to hear that, at least they eventually came back and said they could not do the work, rather than bodging it and getting a bad rep!. Sometimes I wish they would just come out and say they either A. Do not want the work
B. Don't feel confident enough to do what you are asking for.

I would have more respect for garages that did that than the "yeah leave it with us and we'll see what we can do brigade"

Yes I agree but I am not asking for anything special - no bodywork repair required bar one tiny dent and a partial respray (that they recommended) in its original metallic colour.

If a bodyshop can't do that then it begs the question what can they do well

Partial respray isnt a small item though is it.

You say you've used them before
Was there any complaints from you about work they did?

No doubt it's the paint match they are worried about, repairs are easy.
The last thing they want is someone with exacting standards coming back and saying they aren't happy with the paint match.

I think it depends on the Smart person. the guy round my way will do whole panels. I suppose it depends on there confidence and how big the job is? I think some are ex bodyshop guys.

Depends if they have access to a workshop and oven I guess.

I wouldnt want anyone painting whole panels on my drive.

If they think that the color is going to be to much of a pain in the arse to match right, after all if its an unusual shade, with 12 years of fade on it chances are its more hassle than its worth, maybe they took a week to test a few bits out and it didn't come out good enough.

Personally I think they they have had a look decided that its a not starter and been honest, I mean for all you know the guy who used to do all the PIA jobs like that has retired, fked off, on holiday so its not possible for how ever long and they don't want to fk you about?.

Better than them giving it a go as has already been said.

Maybe they're really busy and have bigger/easier jobs to chose from.

At least they were honest!! They could have easily taken on the job, taken your money and had their fingers crossed that you didn't complain if they didn't quite get it right!

Matching paint on an older car is a bugger to do. When I needed a bit of paintwork doing on the Jag, the guy I use was very unhappy with the colour match (looked fine to me).

I suspect that, unless they're too busy (most bodyshops round here seem to be happy enough to let work go, because they are always snowed), they would prefer to do a full re-spray.

Shop probably happy enough to be going other jobs for insurance co.'s where the 'customer' is not too fussy.

Also surely the paint only being available in one shade make the job of matching exactly more or less impossible unless of course your car had suffered zero paint fade over the last 16 odd years.

Wish some of bodyshops I have had the misfortune of dealing with in the past had been so upfront and honest.

I actually got a quote from them this afternoon - £1700 for repainting six panels, removing one dent and removing some minor cracks in rear bumper - £1700, £900 labour and £800 worth of paint.

Called them to say thanks but no thanks, got talking to the bloke who originally looked at it and he said they would do it for £1000, which is pretty much what I was prepared / wanted to pay.

I was prepared to have a full respray but they are 100% confident that they can get a perfect match - seems like they have had a change of heart about it
