I have a 5 yr old 50k mile MINI CooperS and may be a grand.
what can i change it too?

I don't want something massively older or more mileaged. i don;t want anything larger than focus/golf.

  • i had hoped (when they came out) to get a 130i but they are thin on the ground and values haven;t collapsed as much as i'd hoped!
  • it doesn;t have to be a hot hatch but it can;t be massively larger. I have entertained the idea of an evo7/8 but i am too scarred of breakins and breakages!
  • with this budget i can't afford an elise.
  • i don;t think i want a 350z.
  • an s2000 will cost me too much to run.
  • basically it comes down to the focus ST which i quite like but they're (a fair bit) faster , rather than more fun.
  • rs meganes are only any good as r26s (so too dear) and (and i don't quite know why but) rs clios would seem a bit of a retrograde step.
  • golf gtis are too dear and basically just a posh focus st.
  • civic type r would probably be fine but you'd all take the pi55 over the gypo rear suspension...
see it's a frikking nightmare and this is why i have had my car so long!

Focus ST
could you say why?
i like them but having only driven at road test speeds they don't feel 'fun'. but i know they're way faster down a bumpy b road because the suspension is so much more compliant than my BINI. i'd have had to have been wreckless to have tried to keep up with an orange st the other day (after i kindly 'tinkered' left to let him by so as not to spoil his fun!).

my issue is that sutcliffe is pro and harris is con. and harris' views nearly always accord with mine...

What makes you say that? An S2000 would cost more to run than an Evo, ST or RX8?

My Leon Cupra managed 24mpg- best I managed was a 70mph jog back from Coventry from which I scraped 27mpg. IIRC, the Focus ST is around that figure too.

And they will go through tyres quite quickly.

You could get a decent VX220 for £9k though.

it's the insureance. for whatever reason they seem to always come back with daft quotes for me on s2ks. seriously, and i thought it was a mistake, even an evo with Fs and Qs in the title seems to be a couple of hundred quid less???? (so 800 notes versus a grand on the s2k).
i admit to not checking again since becoming 30 (!).. maybe i should..

but again the budget won't stretch to a newer one will it...(?)

CTR last model 2005-on. Subtle styling and lacks the lardy looks of the ST which may well be a better car in some ways though I'd back the Honda for quality and longevity.

I'm not trying to be akward Briskhehe

If you put Super in any one of those cars, which would probably be recommended- I know the VAGs like Optimax (or whatever it's called) and the Evo would probably need it.

Say you put standard in the S2000, that £200 difference will be swallowed up in roughly 4000miles. That's before you take into account the shorter service intervals on the Evos.

But, it's your choice- if you decide against the S2000, and you can afford to run an Evo, then why mutter 'hot hatch' in the same sentance?! They wouldn't even be on my radar! biggrin

okay i might do a bit of research because these 'are my sort of car'. i like that one linked too. ideally i'd have one of that vintage in that mid-dark blue.

I don't know, I had a new 2005 and never driove the pre-facelift. i think the hardest job might be finding a lower mile one though as they seem to becars that get the miles piled on. Can't say I really had any issue with the steering.

golf is too high milage for my liking..i had looked at some fo the ads. the jetta with same engine looks a steal (ins grp 14/15 too!)but i am not 40.
depending on how the debate goes i could consider the breadvan CTR but it'd mean me going back on a lot of criticism wink !
i'd seen that red clio (that's L100nyys's place isn't it?? ) but it's red. and as i say a clio197/200 doesn;t seem to be 'moving things on'.
that r26 is a bit of a find. prob not the cleanest aropund but it does illustrate a point. my mate's buying a new house. maybe i should try and swap him...

Why do you think an S2000 would be too expensive to run ? Running costs seem comparable with the other stuff mentioned, and reliablity should be much better.
