I'm half way through my first DIY mechanic job, replacing the head gasket.

The top of the block has some surface rust where the HG failed and coolant escaped.

What is the best method for cleaning it up?

Bung the water jacket holes up with bits of rag so the cack can't fall in. Then get some very fine sandpaper, moisten it up (oooh 'eck Missus hehe) and gently rub the rust bits off.

Before you put it back together, make sure the top of the block is totally clean and free from any grime or 'bits'.

nono not sandpaper. Nylon cleaning pads will do the job if you're not confident enough to use a file to dress it. It'll be rusty again in the time it takes to have a cup of coffee if it's CI.

I did worry that wet and dry or something similar would get bits in the engine. I suppose I could hoover the cylinders after too?

If you do use went and dry (Although emery cloth would be better) make sure you wrap it around a block of wood, or a rubber sanding block.

It's good practice to clean the entire cylinder head and cylinder block faces anyway

WD40 and 600/800 grit has always worked for me.
