Private Plate Question

Right, I don't expect I'll be able to do this, but my father had a car that we got rid of a few years back and has now been scrapped. I really would like to know if it's possible to have the DVLA make the plate available for sale?

I doubt whether it's do-able to be honest and I've found a plate for sale that is one number out so that'd be a failsafe.

But yeah, does anyone know if it's possible?

Does seem a but odd that the government is not "bringing back to life" plates such as this, seems like money for nothing to me.

I'm sure I enquired about a plate, and when comfirmed 'dead' the DVLA added it to their next auction.... trouble was they had inflated the price massively so I didn't bid.
