TBH - they'll probably only be interested in it if you do something which brings you to the attention of the Polizia or Carabinieri.

Ease off with the right foot, make sure your all your lights are OK and don't let anyone do anything silly in the car.

The verb license or grant license means to give permission.
The noun licence refers to that permission as well as to the document memorialising that permission.

(yes, it's from Wikipedia - but it happens to be correct).

So a licensing authority issues licences.
