So, the government still intends to 'upgrade' the airwaves to DAB by 2015 which means going to a medium that works less well and will make all our OEM head units obsolete. Now I could understand if it's better, but as soon as the weather is inclement digital TV turns to st punch

Has anyone got an in car DAB unit and does it work acceptably? I only bought a new analogue head unit last year irked

News report on R4 this morning was making out the gov't would not put in a concrete date, rather it would be driven by consumer demand, unlike the DTV switchover.

What will happen to the FM band once everything does switch over? Will it be used by anything?

This wont happen for a while as the goverment are selling the TV Radio Frequency to Radio stations so we will have more radio stations for a while yet.

Don't know about DAB head units, but there is the Pure Highway:

Sticks to your windscreen (or anything else you want to attach it to) like a SatNav, runs off the cigarette lighter socket, and according to most consumer surveys seems to get better reception than most car radios. £70.

Only drawbacks I can see are the price (though that will inevitably come down as people rush to change for 2015), the trailing wire across the dashboard, and the name, which sounds like a 4-CD compilation of soft-rock ballads with a '50s Chevy on the cover, found at £5.99 exclusively in wire bins at motorway service stations.

Yep , Have had OE DAB in a new Insgnia for 10 weeks or so and circa 15,000 UK miles , only once has it failed to pick up signal in that time , for a period of 15 or so minutes .
Listening to the football on 5 live in DAB , so much better than MW

No complaints from me ....................yet , time will tell

DAB is great. The unit even gives you the name of the station you can hardly hear.

FM

plus points = Cheap, easy maybe better sound quality, already fitted to almost all cars,

down side= Chris moyles, no 6 music

DAB

Down side = Expensive, patchy coverage, very rare in cars

Upside = 6 music

God i wish i had a car with DAB

I have an OEM DAB in my 2008 BMW. The reception in Surrey is fine mostly. The road from Guildford to Winchester has plenty of dead spots and also driving round Dorset last week *trying* to listen to the world cup was more hassle than it was worth.

All in all, I am glad I paid for the option - even if there are a few frustrations every now and again.

Are current incar DAB solutions capable of switching to the FM band automatically if a station's signal is lost?

Our one Transit has an aftermarket Blaupunkt DAB radio in it, it's brilliant it plays CD's and you can get really crisp sound and good reception onAbsolute Radio and Radio 2, only downside to it is that when you put it onto DAB you get nothing, fking rubbish, but the FM and MW work splendidly.

I have OEM DAB, and it's great. As long as you don't go anywhere. It's forever switching to FM to try to maintain the signal, and then switching back again. So I keep missing five seconds, and then getting another five repeated soon afterwards.

I've stopped using it - I'm permanently on FM now,

We have DAB at home, and that's pretty sketchy too.

Very happy with the DAB radio in my 2009 BMW. The Goon show and Yes Prime Minister on the way to work - sets the day off nicely smile

I had DAB as standard in my old Vectra Design (1st manufacture to fit it) , and it was brilliant , i have no coverage where i live but it would still pick up a couple of ensembles , namely bbc and national dab , so planet rock etc . key thing being vauxhall use an amplified antenna where as a ford DAB radio uses a passive antenna , that makes a huge difference.

Sat on my drive , perfect reception

I had a Ford Galaxy rental car a while back with a Sony DAB radio. It had faultless reception between Wiltshire and Stranraer (including through the Lake District on the M6) on Digital. Perhaps I was lucky.....
