Nissan X Trail - Are they all 4wd?

I know that the new models have 2wd or 4 wd or "auto 4wd" depending on what you choose, but is this the same with the older models (the mk1 models pre-2007) ? Adverts I have seen state "2WD" or "4WD" but make no mention of the variable system on the new car.
