Some thieving Junkie scum has stolen my stereo out of my MX-5, not the end of the world, even though it was a rather swanky Blaupunkt DAB affair, but the trouble is they rather kindly slashed a hole in my roof to get it.

Now, the stereo cost £400 about six years ago and a new roof from Mazda would be what, about £600 plus fitting? My excess is £500.

Is it worth claiming bearing in mind that I could get an equivelent stereo for about £250 and replacement roof for £150 and fit it myself.

Do you think I could convince them to write me a cheque for a Mazda replacement roof and replacement stereo and sort it myself?

How likley is it that they would write it off (It's only worth about £1300) and if they do would I have the option to buy it back from them?

If it makes a difference the facia was removed but it was in my glovebox.

Thankfully I've got no no claims bonus to lose as I've been driving a company car for 10 years and the mx-5 is a second car.

Just sort it yourself, you'll pay out more than that in extra insurance over the next 5 years if you make the claim.

Grr. Makes me wonder what the point of insurance is if when you DO want to claim, its not financially worthwhile...
