When driving on B roads if I see a motorcyclist coming up behind me I will always move as far left as I am able to give more room to pass.

often this will be acknowledged by the biker with a slight wave, which is pleasing.

Just wondered is this normal practice? or am I alone?

Try do this for anyone, any vehicle, even if they are driving like tools.

Puts everyone at a little bit less risk and is good courtesy smile

I move over if it is safe, I also normally give them a little nod in the wing mirror just to confirm i have seen them.

Let them tailgate someone else and get on with your life...

I tend to do it (also on main roads and especially in stop-start traffic) as it is just a nice way of sharing the road. We all have to use it together. I don't begrudge (sp?!) them because they can weave and go through traffic that is stood still.

Oh well - just what I think. It makes me sad that there are people out there who think that m-bikers are in the wrong or something.

Cheers

I would say 10-20% of drivers do. If they move aside, I give them a signal with my left hand as thanks.

I would guess that half are bikers in cars, and the other are just considerate drivers.

The one I like is when the biker sticks out their left foot as they go by. For some reason just tickles me!

I figured car drivers don't get that, so don't do it. Although I do to other bikers.

I do it too. In stop-start motorway traffic I'll move over as far as possible within the lane to let them past. If I'm on a b-road - providing I won't confuse any other road users - I'll flick on the left indicator for a second or two, whether it's a bike or car making progress behind me.

9 times out of ten the biker waves a hand to say thanks.

I do it also. I think my dad and one of my best mates drilled it into my head at some point.

Yeah I do this and if its not going to confuse anyone else on the road I give a quick flash of my left hand side indicator so they know I am going to stay left whilst they filter past rather than swerve back again.

I always say thanks as I pass also, a few times I have come up to a line of cars doing around 30-40mph where I am happy to stay where I am but I have the car in front indicating left and chucking himself nearly off the road!!

I now overtake him as it is safer say thanks and then just sit there...
I know my OH teaches her pupils to see the bikes but stay where they are as the bike will deal with them. smile

As a biker i really appreciate it when someone gives me the extra space especially when filtering and ill always say thanks. On the a/b roads etc it is a help mainly because i know the driver is aware of me behind him/her so they are prepared for an overtake and im not going to shock them as i come past.

Its funny when your on the bike you become very aware of drivers actions and you can always tell when someone has spotted you and is trying to help you and you can also see when they have no clue and havent mirror checked in miles these are the ones im wary of

So thanks for moving over

+1

I'll just raise my hand in thanks. If I'm filtering I'll use the left (clutch) hand and just dip my head if it's the right hand side I'll give them a nod (if commuting I filter about 10-12 miles of motorway queue a day and my fingers *do not* move from covering the front brake).

The foot thing looks absurd (IMO of course).

I too do it, and appreciate an acknowledgement.

Though I am conscious not to go too far as I'm conscious that the bike behind doesn't want to consider I may be about to clip a kerb or similar. I've seen some folk seem so keen to be good that they get very close.
