How long should brake discs last on an Aygo?
Discussion
My secretary is going to pick her car up this afternoon, it's a 1.0 Toyota Aygo, 2.5 years old and in for it's second service. They've replaced the brakes pads and discs (they phoned her on her way home last night to tell here they needed doing) and charged her £289 for the privelage.
Now the thing is the car is used pretty much every day for short journeys and only has 8000 miles on since she bought the car from new, do brake discs really only last this long? i know dealers love to replace these things but this just sounds crazy....

They shouldnt if you drive normally and dont cook the brakes up im sure toyota would have inspected the discs prior to replacement and measured them to see how worn they were - by now their probably in the bin but she would have been able to view the old discs and pads for her self with one of their mechanics to understand why their being replaced.
I can see that happening if most of the journeys are short in stop start traffic. Isn't there an issue with corroding disks on these, anyway?
It's designed as a light weight city car that is not expected to be hooned and the brakes are on the cheap side of effective/durable with that in mind.

Our Aygo is almost 3 years old and coming up for 30k miles, and no need for new discs or pads yet, and hopefully not a while longer. Could driving style be to blame? I often follow people who are constantly on the brakes to reduce speed, while I drive with a bigger gap and simply ease off the throttle.
My Omega I get ~ 20k per set of pads and replace the disks every other pad change. Its a heavy car so should be worse on brakes than an aygo. Having said that I do mostly motorways so the brakes dont get much abuse.
Brake pads and disks I get from the local Vauxhall dealers ~£70 for the front, but closer to £90 for the rear as for some reason vauxhall only sell the rears as individual parts making them more costly.
Fitting is ~ an hour all round plus fiddling time say 30 mins, so if all disks and pads had to be changed I would expect a bill of £160+ labour, at the garage I use its £45+vat per hour so my total would be around £239 . doesnt look far out if she's had them all done.
Of course this bill can be massiveluy reduced by using pattern parts instead of originals but after some bad experiences I dont skimp on the brakes any more.
Now to the question, did they need changing ? Well my mrs drives a Golf V5 , its quite a heavy car and she only runs around town in it, does around 4k miles per year. Current disks have been on there about 5 years and are just about due for a change.
