I'd get this and pocket the change! You'll never see another one on the road..

I was going to suggest an S3C until I saw one on your profile!
If you like the TVR why not persevere with it? An S-Series really shouldn't be that much hassle and if you've spent years and thousands getting it right there can't be much left to do! Mine was near-faultless for the 18 months I owned it and I really miss it now. I normally never go back to a car, but I'd take that one back (or maybe a smart S4C or V8S...)
The performance of an MX5 will feel rather flat after an S3. A good 1.8 Eunous isn't that much slower, but it'll certainly feel it. On the upside - rust aside - they're virtually indestructable so unless you're unlucky an MX5 should be pretty much fire and forget.
To be honest, with the possible exception of the MR2 mentioned above, I struggle to think of a car for the money that's going to be an improvement on an MX5 while also more reliable than a well looked after TVR S-Series. The Porsche 944 S2 is probably closer to the TVR than the MX5 in running costs and potential for aggro and it's more of a GT than a sports car, the Honda S2000 is a little expensive. I guess a six cylinder Z3 might be an option (and quite TVR-like), but you'd spend all the time ruing the fact you didn't save up for a Z3M.
In short, for £5k I'd buy another S3 - preferably a decatted S3C...

Well, I spend all the time driving my 2.8 Z3 happy that I DIDN'T buy a Z3M, I drove a really good example when I was looking for an Z3 and I was amazed how little difference there is between the two of them. I would even say that in normal road driving I enjoy my 2.8 more due to it's torque curve than the 3.2 Z3M engine which you have to rev its nuts off to enjoy its true potential. And spending well below 5k for a car that looks almost exactly the same (I have all the M-bits), drive almost the same and feels almost the same instead of spending 10k makes me one happy bunny!
So yeah - that's a vote for an Z3, forget the MR2 and MX-5.

Looks like I might have to look at front wheelers or more money!
Have you tried an MX5? It really is the logical choice.Personally I'd never swap an S3 for an MX5 (and I've owned both) and I'd re-iterate the idea of getting the TVR sorted out and enjoying it, but if reliability is you're number one priority you'd be hard pushed to beat an MX5 or MR2.
