Car is being a real pig to get into first gear. Doesn't crunch just really hard to push the stick into first. Once going into 2nd and above its fine, reverse can crunch a little.

Ive been told one of 3 things, clucht, syncro or gearbox.

Any from that description which it's likely to be?

Cheers all

clutch would be the first thing I would check... it's also the cheapest and easiest to fix. (most of the time)

Could be clutch slave cylinder starting to go, or the clutch fluid level being low?

I'll check this, will have to get it into the garage though. Glad its likely to be a clutch problem, a new gearbox would mean a new car now!

A common issue on MX5's can be the gear selector bushes. You can buy a kit for the inner and outer, and isn't too much of an issue.

It is apparant by way of awkwardness in selecting first and second. But then that's an MX5, so it may not be that.

Check the clutch fluid level resiviour under the bonnet.

I'd have thought the first thing to do, would be to find what car it is. Different cars have different linkages and weakspots.

Might be something simple, but might not. e.g. a Pug 106 has a stupid linkage from the bottom of the stick to the gearbox. These often break or fall off, but are cheap to fix and can often be patched together with a cable tie (I know as I have). However if the vehicle in question is a Land Rover or something else, then it's likely it might be something else.

Adjust the clutch biting point I reckon. Shouldn't be hard and hopefully is just a turning a screw job.
