Soooo im looking to sell my 328i and get a sax vts as a cheap run around, as they seem to be cheap to run and fun to drive. Only thing is, they're s bit chavy, and i can't think of anything else that would be as cheap and fun
Any ideas?
Strange as there are hundreds...
Any ideas?

Seriously consider a Puma, don't be put off by the girly Image. They are huge fun to drive. Plenty around for less than a grand aswell.
I'm 6 foot 4 and manage to drive it fine!
I'm seriously considering it, but will one be as economical yet as quick as a vts? Ive chased a played with vts down a back road in my impreza, and i had to really work to keep up with it!I'm 6 foot 4 and manage to drive it fine!

I'm 6'5" I doubt I'd fit in one unless someone knows otherwise?
Depends how big your shoes are- the pedals are close and offset to the left. With size 13s or bigger you could press all 3 at once. That aside, you won't find anything as much fun for the money. The 106/Saxo chassis is fantastic, better even than the much praised 205- more grip, similar lift-off-oversteer characteristics but much more controllable when it does let go. You will get an OK condition Saxo for £1k, or a rough 106. 205s are getting old now, and for that money you'd be looking at a well worn one. Same with Golfs.
No, figures seem to suggest the VTS is quicker. Puma is a nicer place to be than a Saxo though. Not sure how they compare handling wise, I've only ever driven a diesel Saxo!
I can manage approx 38MPG to a tank in my Puma if driven sensibly.
What about a 306 GTI-6, not sure what the prices are like on these now.

But seriously there are loads of cars from BMR Rover's with a slippy diff, to Pugs, VW's, Ford's, Vauxhalls and so on. Good number of classics too if you don't mind a non hatch.
Not saying they'll be much or any cheaper than the BMW to run, but then I'm not sure a VTS would really be that much cheaper either.
Slightly ropey Porsche 924s come up for under a grand, they won't be as fast as a VTS but you get loads of PH cool points for having something RWD and Porsche badged
Edit:
Your name made me look at RX-7s, and their is one in your budget¬

What could possibly go wrong with that?
