Air Con Not Cold Enough, Help!
Discussion
MK2 Mondeo systems require sufficient gas to run the compressor.
When you hit the A/C switch you should hear the RPM increase a bit as the compressor kicks in. If it doesn't then it could be a number of faults, but most common is low system pressure which stops the system from running.
On my MK2 I had the system re-gassed but now have an issue with it kicking in and out erratically.

Hi all, I have a Mk2 Mondeo, and the aircon just doesn't seem to be as cold as it should be.
The radiator and condensor are about 18 months old, there are no leaks and the pressure is around 40 psi.
Any experts care to give me the benefit of their expertise?
Thanks
Tim
Do you run your aircon in winter (as you are supposed to) or do you only run it when it's warm outside? The radiator and condensor are about 18 months old, there are no leaks and the pressure is around 40 psi.

I ask because if you only run the aircon when it's warm outside you'll end up needing to get it regassed all the time.

True, a couple of times a month helps keep the o-rings lubricated. Dry seals = leaks.I ask because if you only run the aircon when it's warm outside you'll end up needing to get it regassed all the time.
it'll probably want the filter-dryer replacing too. That's when Quick-Fit cease to be a cheap option - go to an air-con specialist, and have a proper job done.
Get them to clean the evaporator too, stops it smelling skunky when you first turn it on, and get's rid of nasty bugs that don't do you a lot of favours.
As an aside...
According to reports, there are cases of Legionnaires Disease in the UK being caused by windscreen washer water (with no additive in it) as it allows the Legionnella bug to breed like billyo!.

Hi all, I run the aircon all year round, and as previously posted, there are no leaks, so shouldn't need a re-gas.
The air con works ok, but it isn't cold enough. I've checked the pressure with the aircon working, by using a guage on the low pressure port.
According to the instructions, 35-45 psi is the normal range.
Thanks
Tim

Aircon compressors tend to run off a belt on the engine, so the compressor speed is linked to engine rpm. In other words, when your engine is idling, so is the aircon compressor.
Is it just not cold enough when the car is sat idling, or does it not work at all when you're driving around?
By the way, is your car petrol or diesel?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I bought a can of re-gas, as I thought that the pressure may have dropped.
On connecting the guage to the low pressure port with the engine idling and aircon on full, the pressure was normal, according to the instructions.
When driving the car, within a minute or two of switching the aircon on, you can feel that it is working, as very cool air comes out of the vents.
it's just not as cold as I remember it being when the radiator etc were first replaced. It just doesn't get as cold as it should, but it is working.
Thanks
Tim

You're over the limit of what I think I know.I'd suggest a real aircon specialist.
I wonder how much a new compressor unit is?
If it really really annoyed me, that would be the bit I'd expect to be looking at replacing... or possibly swapping to a similar car if it made more economic sense.
Sorry fellah.

Pressure doesn't matter tbh. I had mine regassed earlier this year, I think the extremely cold winter killed it, as there was only 10% of what is supposed to be in there, left.
The chap who did it has said I can return and have it done again, as he said that there was a fair bit of oily sludge stuck in there, and that a few miles of driving would clear it out.
Right now its probably at about 75% effectiveness, so I'm taking him up on his offer. You really have to have the machinery to remove the old gas and oil, or you'll be wasting your money.
Oh and no matter how tightly sealed, they all leak over time.

But as I see it, if the pressure is as high as it should be, then the compressor is doing it's job, and there must be enough gas too?
If there was a leak, then the pressure would have dropped and I would have simply topped it up again.
To the poster mentioning that his aircon cuts in and out, from my understanding, this is caused by too much pressure within the system, probably caused by over filling.
Cheers
Tim

does the blower on recirc with no aircon on feel stronger? If so your pollen filter is blocked, about £6 and ten minutes to replace will resotre the correct amount of airflow through the matrix.
How can you tell when the fan speed is designed to increase when the recirc is on?I think aircon is one of the least understood areas, there appears to be so much misunderstanding on it (I'd include myself here). I know of a very good specialist catman local to me, where abouts in London are you?
