Uh Oh.

I do believe I've developed my first Alfa fixation and surprisingly it the 166 v6 which is doing it for me!

I've noticed I can can get (seemingly) decent examples for about the 2k mark, is this a potential disaster in the making?

My plan would be to run it for 6 months or so over the winter so whilst I don't mind spending money on a car I certainly don't want to writing a blank cheque for it!

Pistonheads - because making sweeping generalisations matters.

Alfa 166 - Lovely motor, and if it has been well looked after you shouldn't have any serious issues (or put another way, no more issues than you would expect with a 2k car of that type). A 166 is more likely to be enthusiast owned as well.

I am sensing that 'S Line Luxury' might have a slight bias to towards a certain German car maker. Not sure why I am thinking this, but I am usually pretty good with hunches and stuff.

166's are great probably the best put together of all the Alfa range a good solid feel to them.

Go for the 3.0 over the 2.5 as MPG isn't much difference.

£2k will get you a good one.

I have been very happy with mine.

Possible problems can be heater matrix can leak on the ECU but there is steps to be taken to prevent.

Go to Alfaowners.com loads of imformation and a good buyers guide.

A friend of mine used to have a 166 Super. Fantastic car, 3.0V6 manual and I struggled to pull away from him in my 147GTA.

Some stole it though.

I guess the best time to buy a 166 is when they have done all thier depreciating.

Should be an interesting motor although I never liked the looks myself, at least not the front end.

Gorgeous cars, and by all accounts well made.

Personally I'm waiting for the facelifted 166 to drop in value to around the £5k mark because, in my opinion, there's not a 4-door saloon this side of the Quattroporte with as much class/style.

I had a 166 3.0 Lusso about 7 years ago on a 51 plate (BG51 BHK). Kept it 2 years and 60k and it was a lovely car. Not that good on fuel, stunning looks, hideous depreciation but never let me down.

On balance I would have another as a daily driver, in fact even saw my old one a few months ago for sale up in Scotland somewhere for a shade over £2k but I wanted something closer to home and better on fuel otherwise I would have had it back (and tried not to think about the £22k I paid for it first time round!)

Or you could get an Audi - after all they are the motoring equivalent of 42 to some folks! wink
