Jaguar 'F-Type' Gets Green Light
Boxster rival confirmed as part of JLR model offensive (let's hope it looks this good)
Tata Motors CEO, Carl-Peter Forster, has confirmed that Jaguar has been given the go-ahead to build its long-awaited Boxster-rivalling roadster.
Speaking to German trade paper Automobilwoche, the boss of Jaguar Land Rover's parent company revealed that the so-called 'F-Type' - a spiritual successor to the Jaguar E-Type - will form part of a new model offensive for JLR.
Joining the new sports car - which will sit below the XF in the company's product line-up - will be a replacement for the X-Type, an XF estate and a long-wheelbase XF for the Chinese market.
As for Land Rover, the new Range Rover Evoque has already been revealed, but it will soon be joined by a new Freelander. This will be smaller than the current car, making room for a larger seven-seat version to slot between it and the Discovery. Finally, by 2015 there will also be an all-new replacement for the iconic Defender.

...although would it be sacrilege to prefer an FR platform to the car, hopefully with a tweaked version of their V6 as standard, and a shoehorned-in 5.0 V8 (n/asp, please) as the '-R' version. A shortened XK platform would do that, although I don't know which one they're using as a donor.

£30k for the V6, maybe £50k for the V8, and with any luck if they really are going to replace the X-Type, they might to well to start with this floorplan and lengthen it rather than platform-engineering a Mondeo. Obviously a smaller engine will be needed for a tilt at the 320i, so maybe after a while, a budget F-Type will be available as a kind of very posh, nicely-finished MX5-basher with a 2-litre engine.
Diesel wouldn't be preferable, but given the fact that Jaguar's diesel isn't half bad, I wouldn't hold it against them if they did use it.
