A juddery clutch.

I've had the car nearly a year and a half, and for probabaly the last 10 months it judders when I pull away from a standstill. No issues once moving through the gears, and when the engine has warmed up it also seems much smoother. Today the judder seemed to feel worse so its got me worrying. Any thoughts?

Also, probabaly unrelated, intermitantly when driving and approaching an obstacle that I have to slow down for, when I take my foot off the throttle, no matter how gently I do it, the car joltes when my foot comes off the pedal. (as if I had been drifting in nuetral and dropped it into gear and picked the clutch pedal up really fast... if you know the sensation??) It does this in every gear?

So should I be worried? I should have bought an A3 s-line, wouldn't have had any of these issues with that quality piece of kit....

Thanks in advance guys and girls

Is that the second issue or both? Is it going to be a big issue (i.e. do I need to get it sorted A.S.A.P)? What would happen when it goes?

Big £££ to fix?

Is this a Toyota? I had the same problem on a Verso. The dealer tried to convinve me it was a characteristic of the car and that I should adjust my driving style. Muppets.

It sounds like the cause of both issues and it wont be cheap, wouldn't expect change from £500 from a dealer

doesn't the 1.6 stilo have a solid flywheel, if so it could be clutch slave cylinder related, start with the cheapest first I always say, when I had my Fiat Coupe I thought the clutch had gone and it isn't a cheap job, £35 on a slave cylinder and it was still going strong when I sold it.

Im no expert but i'd start saving, it's the sort of thing that you need to fix sooner rather than later, wouldn't panic but it needs doing soon

At 110k miles, it's probably just worn out. They do judder if the friction plate has worn unevenly, become warped, or there's a contaminant (condensation, oil..)

You expected unwaivering reliablility and longetivivty of components on a 110k petrol engined Fiat?

As for an internet diagnosis, it's nearly as pointless as googleing bad health symptoms...

I never said I expected any of those, I just begrudge speding money on it, as its not worth a great deal in the first place. I also didnt expect to have to spend SO much in the short space of time so far this year. Up until this year it hadn't cost me much at all.

if its not got a dual mass flywheel, it sounds asif the clutch plate is warped. this can happen on cars with smaler engines mainly as people tend to slip the clutch to get it away quick

These symptoms also sound like the very common problem of worn CV/tripode joints which are far from a big bill problem to fix. If they are the outers then steering angle changes the noise.

Just to update and not leave a thread unfinished...

I do have a solid flywheel, not a dual mass one. A member of fiatforum suggested it may be my rear engine mount that has worked loose and that can cause the symptoms I have been experiencing. So yesterday I got that tightened up and I haven't felt any of the symptoms yet. However, the problems didnt present themselves everytime I drove the car, so only time will tell if it is actually fixed.

If this doesn't solve the problem I think i'm looking and broken clutch springs, and therefore a new clutch so fingers crossed.

I had a similar problem on an old run-around Civic I bought years ago.

It would only happen when cold - the guy I bought it off said it was oil on the clutch.

Owned the car for a good couple of years and never got any worse.

We've currently got an ancient Accord that displays similar problems. Not going to worry about it to be honest.

We had a Rover in the family that always juddered when setting off. It juddered for 4years. Never got worse/never got better.
