Any BMW enthusiasts able to shed some light as to what car put me well in my place this morning?

I was on the Autobahn going at a fair rate (130ish) Looked in my rear mirror and had a BMW trying to get in my boot. Once the inside lane was clear, I pulled in to let him past, but he sat beside me clearly wanting a bit of a run. I put the foot flat to the floor and he was leaving me like I was parked, I went all the way to the limiter and still he was pulling away, so obviously well above 155!

I was driving the Jag XFS 3ltr d

He was in a BMW Estate 5 Series with no markings and the exhaust was a twin pipe at one side.

I know the Jags no supercar, but its hardly a slouch either. But the way that beemer made mincemeat of me was a little embarrasing, to say the least!

If it really was like you were standing still I'd expect it to be an Alpina B5.

Is that reference to a taboo I have broken with regards to my post or the fact I have admitted to getting thrashed? confused

535, 535D 545, 550 are you options. unless you want to go into the realms of Alpina-dom.

It wasn't quite that bad, but for the first time since owning the car, it made it feel a bit slow!

Ok I am getting the gist here that there are countless models that are more than capable, it wouldn't have been so bad had the car had some form of badging on the rear. In any other scenario I would have assumed it was a run of the mill 2ltr d.
I guess I have a bit to learn about BM's then!

It doesn't matter what car you have - there will always be someone faster...

At least you can stretch your car's legs on the Autobahn smile

To be fair, the Jag XF 3.0 diesel unit is swift, but not that swift.

A wrung out 330/530 petrol could easily hassle it all the way to 155.

However, as Graham has already said, a 535, 535D or 540/550 would be the options - any of these in standard trim would easily dust the Jag.

rsv gone!

Don't the larger BM's have twin or even quad exhausts as per the Audis though? Thats what had me at a loss as to the engine under the bonnet.

As everyone knows, bigger/more exhausts = POWERFULL! Thats right isent it?! biggrinrolleyes

Only M cars have quad exhausts from the factory.

Everything else is twin exhausts, unless 320/520.

Not going to go totally beardy and tell you how to tell what engine from the twin exhaust (you can tell by size and shape) but rule of thumb is: single = easy, quad = leave it son.
